p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What is the tolerance of Microadjustment on lenses?

Hello,

I have a question about microadjustment of lenses on 5d2.
All of my canon lenses are within +/- 2 or less on Microadjustment. However, my new Sigma 35mm f1.4 lens has +9. Is that too high? Is there any drawback of having high adjustment number?
Thank you for your help.

All of my Canon lenses are not within +/-2! +9 is fine. I have a Canon lens that is at +15. That's why the adjustment is there. Go take some pictures.

They don't call it microadjustment for no reason...... 15 sounds like a big number but its not. We got along for 2 decades of autofocus without this. Most of the time, MA is a tweak to make something already good even better.

The larger question is whether after the adjustment, the lens focuses right. If the answer is "yes" then ignore the number and go shoot.

Alright, I got it!! I'm gonna go shoot some shots!!
What's up with that attitude though?
Did I sound like someone who's obsessed about gears or something? I had a question and I asked, because it seemed odd that only Sigma lens had that much adjustment needed. Dont need to be telling me what to do. I do use my camera and lenses without ppl telling me to do so.

Chillax, it's perfectly normal banter.

If it makes you feel any better, the (few) non-Canon lenses I've MAed seem to need more MA than Canon-branded lenses. I only have done a few non-Canons so this means essentially nothing statistically.... The worst was the Tamron 150-600 at +19 on my 5D2. On my 1D4, the number was like 12 or something.

It would be a concern mainly if the adjustment needed were different for closeby subjects vs. far-away subjects. If that would happen, or if you you'd like to keep your setting in camera at 0, Sigma offers a dock that you can connect to the lens and fine tune the focus. Not just in general but also at different focus distances. I've used it and it works very well.

OK, here is the word directly from Canon:

http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/af_microadjustment_article.shtml

Each AFMA unit corresponds to 1/8 of the depth of field for a given lens at its widest aperture. So the +/-20 AFMA steps corresponds to 5X DOF.

For example, an image shot at 10 ft with a 100mm F2.8 macro lens will have a DOF of 0.51' (range 9.75' to 10.26'). So 1 AFMA unit corresponds to a focus accuracy of 0.765"! I doubt most people's eyes are that accurate. Modern autofocus systems are quite accurate, as long as you correctly position the focus point where you want it. I suspect a lot of the grumbling on this board about focus accuracy can be traced to poor technique.

Before you fire up the flame throwers, go check Roger Cicala's blog on LensRentals.com.

My greatest adjustment is 10 steps for the 70-200/2.8L IS II + 2x III on 6D. Everything else is within +/-5 steps. Forty-two of my eighty-one tested combinations are zero.

If MA makes the lens better, and it is a repeatable "better" then I wouldn't worry about it.
If it makes the lens better, then a week later, the lens is different, and a week later different again...I would send the lens back or into Canon (or in this case, Sigma).
