Speaking as an older (65) man with a bad back, I am really anxious to try out the V3 and the 70-300!
Yes the 300 f4 is a fine lens-the f2.8 is better, but I can't enjoy a day in the field carrying them, anymore.
As to the idea that it is "too much reach", 200mm equivalent is exactly the same as 200 mm, when it comes to stability, so don't be silly. The real advantage to dx or full frame is low noise at high iso.
