p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is this normal for a 28mm 2.8 AIS?

Hi there,

I am new here although I have been lurking around for some time.

I have been drawn to your MF thread and have been tempted to get into the fray.
Bought a 28mm 2.8 AIS after reading all the great reviews of this lens and it arrived today.
It has great center sharpness but is quite soft even at f5.6 as this picture shows.

Is this normal of this lens or did I get a lemon?

Not sure if this is the right way to post a picture.

It is quite distractingly soft all over the edges.

Thank you for your comments.

Too small an image to tell. Can you post a larger one?

Sorry, just realised how small it is. First time on this forum and trying to upload a picture

Hopefully this is better.

That is NOT normal. There is something very wrong with that lens. Get your money back if you can.

Sandy knows so I'd listen. In my experience this lens is sharp wide open and works beautifully that way on closeups. Return it if you can. And hopefully we'll see you soon with some photos on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread...

I'm sorry I was so blunt. I was honestly shocked to see your sample. I hope you can work this out.

I am staying in Malaysia. Will contact the seller in US. Not sure if he will accept although he states he will.

Definitely something weird about that. The 28/2.8 AIS is better up close than at infinity, but this is way beyond what should be expected from it -- looks almost like what you might expect in shooting a DX lens on a full frame body. Something is seriously out of whack. It didn't arrive with a filter attached, and covered in grape jelly, did it?

; )

Best of luck getting it resolved.

And thanks for being blunt. The seller has agreed to accept a refund in principe over ebay communications.

Thanks.

Thanks. Sending it back today.

Just wondering would the 28mm f2 be better at infinity compared to the 2.8?

Despite this lens massive flaw, I love the handling and center sharpness just blew me off even at 2.8.
