p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What to take to Walt Disney World?

This is my first post.
I'm just a novice and hobbyist enjoying the world of photography.

I'm planning to take a family trip to DisneyWorld this Fall and would like opinions on which lens(es) I should bring.
I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible.

My research so far indicates that a fast low light short zoom would be the best...17-50mm f/2.8.
Unfortunately, I do not own one of these lenses.
I was wondering if I should consider buying one...either Sigma or Tamron since I'm on a tight budget.
Or will the Nikon 18-105mm be good enough. The only issue is its variable aperture range.

I do have the 35mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.8D & 85mm f/1.8G...just trying to avoid swapping lenses.

As for a wide angle lens, I have the Tokina 12-24mm f/4.

Now what should I do?

Here is my current collection:

Bodies:
Nikon D7000/Grip D3100/Grip

Lenses:
AF-S DX 18-105mm
AF-S 70-300mm
AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G
AF-S Micro 40mm /f2.8G
AF-S 85mm f/1.8G
AF 50mm f/1.8D
Tokina SD 12-24mm f/4 DX

Any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I have included the following lenses to my list:

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8
Sigma 90mm f/2.8 macro

I live not all that far from Disney World and like visiting there a couple times a year. I travel very lightly with just one or two lenses at most and something like the 17-50 f/2.8 would be ideal. I have even used nothing but a G15 or an S100. The place is vast, usually quite busy, and there's so much to see that carrying about a large bag of lenses is rather tiring.

Thanks for your advice.

I just purchased an one month old Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 off eBay in mint condition for under $330 shipped!
US version.
Unfortunately since it is considered used the warranty is no longer valid.

Would you recommend bringing the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 DX along with the Sigma?
Or should the Sigma be wide enough?

Have fun first so go as light as possible by bringing just one lens and take your 18-105 instead. 18mm is wide enough plus you may need the extra reach if you go to Animal Kingdom Kalimanjaro shooting the wild animals from a far distance.

Since I just purchased the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, it will be on the D7000 pretty much all the time.
I think the constant 2.8 aperture will be beneficial when indoors and at night.
I'm not too concerned...I've read that it is very difficult to take good pictures while touring Animal Kingdom due to all the motion. I might just bring along the 70-300mm for that day just incase.

Thanks for the help.

You will be happy when using the 17-50 alone. Lots of gear are disturbing there.

For the DX, I would take something ultra wide like a Tokina 11-16, and a fast, small prime like a 50 1.8. I personally wouldn't bother with a long lens.

The widest lens I own is the Tokina 12-24 f/4.
My main objective is to carry the lightest/least amount of gear, but still be able to get some good shots while I'm there.

I plan to also have fun while I'm at it.

I'm a passholder and we go on a pretty regular basis...I usually just bring one lens. Your 18-105, 12-24, or 17-50 would all be fine IMO.

D3100 probably would be definitely lighter, but the D7000 has dual SD and better IQ...plus it's not that much of a difference in size.
I will have to test out both bodies to see if there is a sufficient difference with the Sigma 17-50mm.
I will also have my Sony Xperia Z1s and QX10 with me.

Dragion, I have a Tokina 12-24 F4 and a Nikon 17-55 F2.8, with a D7K.

Visited Disney many times, so your new lens with the D7K will be enough, like some other members stated, the place is too big and with many people around, so carrying lot of stuff is a PITA.

Enjoy your time with your family.

Regards

Eltano

For me, Disney World/Land is a phone camera kind of place.

Last year when I visited Disney, I bring my D800E with 24-70 but I end up using the RX100 most of the time. Too many people and it is hard to go on a roller coaster ride with a huge camera hanging on your neck.

If I had a Sony RX100...I wouldn't need to be asking for all this advice!
It would have simplified everything.

On Craigslist here in Boston, there was a RX100 II for sale for $500...just couldn't justify paying for another camera when I already have the D3100 & D7000 already.

I'm going in June and here is what I am taking:

D610
85 1.4 for low light shoots on rides and what not
24-120 as the walkaround
70-200 2.8 for fireworks
tripod
Variable ND filter

I've talked to several shooters on POTN and this was the standard rec. Probably could do without the 70-200, but my understanding is the range makes framing fireworks a little easier over the distances you may be from the show.

Nice collection.

Unfortunately, the only tripod I have is made for my very light camcorder and won't sustain the D7000...I don't trust it to even try.
I'm going to attempt taking the fireworks handheld.

This Disney trip is for casual family fun, so I don't want to be buried with all this gear. Just to have something to take nice photos with...treasure the memories.
