Just wanted to share what that old outdated glass, on a terrible TC, on a cheap consumer body can do Excuse the bird feeder, but I need lots of practice for birds. Having an essential tremor in my hands does not help much...(note the sky high shutter speed lol)

Wonderful! I'm leaning more and more in the 300 2.8 direction and getting rid of my 80-400G. I own all the TCs anyways

Jason, You must have a sadistic nature posting this knowing we have spent all of our money on rebate lenses. Nice.

I have not known anyone outside of my family that has essential tremors. God's little joke, give them essential tremors then give them a desire to be a photographer.......

Nice pic btw...

The only time it hinders me is with the long lens. The weight of it makes my hands/forearms tremble away.

I'm in with that too Jason. I've had this glass forever and have just never been able to let go of it. With a TC, the focus is not perky to go from 3 meters to 90. But if you''re locked on to a player or flying object... it tracks like the pro glass it is and rarely disappoints.

These are serious contenders for people looking to step up to faster long glass.

Rough crop.. but the originals are remarkable.

I never played with the older AF model. The AF-I still has zippy AF with the TC attached, until it gets dark. Without the TC it is lightning fast, I can only imagine how fast the modern teles are.

Sweet, Jason I'll share an AF-S 300 f4/TC-20E III combo grab with ya,
from ~20 yds this morning...best $899 I've ever spent.

Oddly enough, my TC20 works best at longer distances. I know we've had the discussion before about it usually being terrible at long distances. Funny creatures TCs.

I couldn't agree more.

Great shots Jason, the first at 3200 ISO and the TC is remarkable. I use a D7100, 300 2.8 combo and have had terrible luck with the 1.7 TC (very well could be me). Have you tried a 1.7? Did the TC 2.0 require significant focus adjustment?

I'm about ready give the 2.0 a try or maybe look for another 1.7, probably both

Is that a red crossbill? They are pretty rare.

I have ZERO fine tune with the TC, but +10 with the naked lens. On my D300 no amount of fine tuning brought the TC into any kind of sharpness.

Yes it is! I rarely shoot the lens bare. Think I might ditch the TC20 and snag a TC14 after seeing the massive difference.

Jason, which TC did you have issues with? If its the 17TCII, you may have gotten a bad one. I have owned two, and with my D300 AF fine tune was between -3 and +5 depending on the lens and body.

The problem was with my TC20EIII. Works great on my D7100 and "okay" on my D700, but attribute that to pixel density. Like I said, on the D300, I could crank it to -20 or +20 and it seemingly made ZERO difference.
