Usually we just threaten the lenses, but once in a while, when nothing else works, we'll give them a whack.

It hasn't ever helped, but the other lenses waiting for adjustment are right there on the shelf - I think it's important that they know what happens if they don't cooperate.

Wow. 610 responses (and counting) to that blog post. People must really want some scratched lens elements.

I sure hope LR decides to get into the lens alignment business. They could make a killing adjusting new and used and dropped lenses.

We'll probably offer testing soon, but adjusting them will be another matter, at least for a while. Right now our average labor per adjustment is 3.5 hours (which is, I suspect, why the service centers don't do a very good job - techs are expected to do 4-6 repairs a day). At the moment I've got 16 of our lenses waiting their turn - we just don't have time to do outside lenses, too.

The good news is I've gotten some interest from a couple of independent repair centers who are coming down to see our equipment, so they may be interested in offering a similar service soon.

Canon and Nikon should do as good a job, but I doubt they always do.

When Canon and Nikon were younger, smaller and run by engineers I'm sure they did a great job. Now that 'bean-counters' run the show, customer service gets the ax in favor of quick returns.

When LR goes public and takes over the world and Roger is pushed out by the board because he uses terms like "quality" and "service", they too will offer crappy service. It's called growing pains.

Please excuse any hyperbole.

I don't know what to call it, but I'd like to have one.

Problem is, I don't want to (or can't) pay for one!

Looks like an awesome tool.

Roger, do you have any idea what Canon and Nikon actually use to make these adjustments in their service centers? Do you suppose they use your old method of taking taking photos after each adjustment? Or something special like this?

You might be surprised to find that they would also be interested in buying these testers.
