Profoto B1 Firmware Adds TTL Metering for EOS 1D X
The Profoto B1 Firmware update enabling TTL metering for the Canon EOS-1D X was released a few weeks back but because of last minute glitches, the download link was removed. Finally, after fixing the bug, Profoto made it available for download again.

From Phofoto:

The TTL metering is made possible with Profoto’s patent-pending AirTTL system. Already at launch Profoto promised to continuously update the AirTTL system. One of the most frequently requested features is TTL metering with Canon’s flagship model: the Canon EOS-1D X. Today, this feature is made available free of charge through an easily installed firmware upgrade.

Note that it is not the B1 off-camera flash itself that needs to be upgraded; it is the small radio transmitter that is mounted on the Canon camera’s hot shoe: the Air Remote TTL-C.The process is very simple:

1) Go to www.profoto.com/support.
2) Sign in with an existing My Profoto account or create a new one.
3) Register your B1 and your Air Remote TTL-C.
4) Download the upgrade.
5) Open the software and follow the simple instructions. That is it. You can do all of this without having to contact a service station.

This is the first of many planned upgrades for the B1 off-camera flash and the AirTTL system. Profoto is currently working on a firmware upgrade for high-speed sync (HSS). Profoto is also busy developing the new Air Remote TTL-N that will enable TTL metering with Nikon cameras. Both the HSS upgrade and the Air Remote TTL-N are expected to be released in 2014.

Unfortunately, they just pulled it off the site. Apparently it was causing the B1 to fire at full power in TTL mode.

Yep. I downloaded it this morning and at times but not always the light would fire at full power. They say they rushed and didn't do enough testing. That's quite fishy as users including me, and I'm no techie, experienced the issue immediately. That sounds like no testing at all.

Good to hear it's on their agenda. I have two new B1's and they're amazing. Let's hope they get this right and re-release the update

So, my question is can I light up an NHL or NBA arena with a few of these or what?

If you can light up a small mountain with two then I am sure you can light up an NBA arena

I could do that with a few speedlights as well but I cannot light up an entire arena with a few speedlights. Maybe about 16 speedlights with a four square setup strategically placed would get me close. I'm definitely looking for a techinical answer to my ignorance. Is a 500w B1 gonna be powerful enough to change the "game" for a professional sports shooter that wants to shoot HSS(that doesn't stand for high school sports, ) as well. Specifically Basketball and Hockey in an NBA or NHL arena size atmosphere.
I'm asking for a friend.

It doesn't yet have HSS. When and whether it will is anyone's guess.

Light up an arena? Hardly.

I've used 600 watt lights in the past and they've been fine. It's just as important to have efficient reflectors for arena lighting as power.

Nice! I tried it briefly at home before leaving to work, but it seems like the firmware is only for the air remote.. Is this right? Also, I couldn't get my remote to display "USB" after pressing the + and C button together followed by on button. I guess I'll just try it again when I get back home tonight.

Anyone who tries this update, I'd really appreciate your guidance. Thank you.

Great. Thanks for the tip. I'll try with it switched off.

So, is 1DX TTL working fine now? How about HSS? not yet right?

Just upgraded my Air-TTL remote and TTL seems to be working great on my 1DX. The firmware update was VERY easy to do.

Simply register your remote with the serial number (inside battery cover) > plug remote into computer with cord > hold down Energy+ C button to start the update. Super fast and simple Happy they got the bug fixed!
