If anyone here has the 70-200 f4 IS *and* the 400mm 5.6L, could you please let me know if the tripod collar from the 400mm will fit and work properly on the 70-200 f4? Thanks

No. And be wary of 3rd party cheapy collars you can get on eBay. Some are OK, and some will dump your gear on the floor... or worse. You never know, which is why the real-deal Canons sell for well over $100

That said, the 70-200 F4 is light enough that the camera mount can safely support it on a tripod.

Thank you sir, for your helpful reply. I need/prefer the tripod collar because most of the time I will be using a gimbal head, and mounting on a gimbal from the camera body can be troublesome to say the least. There are some $50 aftermarket collars I might consider. I'll check the reviews. Thanks again.

That lens might be physically too small to work right on a gimbal.....as in not long enough to keep the camera out of the way and allow a full range of motion. I would check all this out before you start spending money and/or make sure return policies are liberal.

I have the 400 5.6L and sometimes use it on a gimbal... any shorter seems to me that the body will get in the way.

Yes, both lenses use the identical collar, so of course they are completely interchangeable. I'm currently sharing one between my 70-200 f4L IS and my 400mm f5.6L, until I can buy a second collar.

B&H shows the tripod collar/ring A-2 as being for both the 70-200 f/4 IS and the 400 5.6. In fact, when you check the "what's in the box" on B&H for the 400 5.6L, it states "tripod mount ring A-2 for 70-200mm f/4L"

They are definitely interchangeable between the 70-200f/4is &400f/5.6L!
I have done so for many years.

The collar for the 70-200 II matches the 100-400 as well.

Thank you to every single person here, I greatly appreciate all of your helpful replies and the time taken to assist me on this. I've just ordered the 70-200 and am looking forward to using it; glad to save the $150 on the collar by using my existing 400mm one. Thanks!

Quick update- I've now used the collar from the 400 on the 70-200. On the 400, the lens does not rotate when you lock down the knob (which is how it should be, IMO), but on the 70-200 the lens rotates in the collar even when the knob is all the way tight. This is not what I wanted, so on a photo trip over the past week using it, I went all MacGyver on it and put a folded over strip of a ziploc bag around the lens before attaching the collar. Worked beautifully; gave just enough thickness to let the collar lock down tight so the lens doesn't rotate, unless I loosen the knob and do it myself, of course! Hope this helps.

Are you saying the Canon Tripod Ring A(W) that came with your 400mm f/5.6 does not fit well on your 70-200mm f/4 ?

BTW, there is a Canon black tripod ring (not "L") that also works on the 70-200/4. I don't remember the product number, but it works fine, and was $50 cheaper. (Several years ago). Frankly, I like the look of the black ring.

It doesn't work.... I've tried it. Some generic 3rd party rings work on both lenses because of the way their "squeeze" is designed.

Just to be clear, we're talking about the 70-200 F4L IS --- I have no idea if the 400 5.6 ring works with the non-is version of the 70-200 F4L.

Thanks. Yes, the IS version is what I have. Well anyway, the collar works perfectly now that I slipped the ziploc plastic strip in, so I can't complain!

I use a couple of Ring Mount As interchangeably between the 70-200/4 IS, 300/4 and 400/5.6.

I have three aftermarket collars for the 400L 5.6, 200L 2.8 and the 70-200L F4's.

All three fit and work perfectly and if you purchase them through Amazon and they don't fit they are easily returned.

I have both lenses sitting in front of me, and I can swap the collars back and forth between them with no issues - both collars fit perfectly on either lens, with no slipping.

Maybe you got an aftermarket collar without knowing it?

HOLY CRAP. You nailed it! Damn. I can't believe I didn't notice that. My 400 5.6L was purchased from B&H as used...apparently they screwed me and I got an aftermarket collar (maybe B&H didn't notice it either). I never would have even thought to consider that. But thanks to you, I just checked, and yes, it's aftermarket. No Canon symbol or other markings on it whatsoever.

Well, it works great with the 400mm, and with the zoom lens I dialed it in with the ziploc strip () so I guess I'm ok for now.

Thanks guys
