I currently have a nikon d3 and d600?

The d3 is great and I've blown up photos huge without loss of quality but I was thinking about upgrading to a d800 just due to the d3 continuing to lose value.

Any thoughts?

Maybe cross post this on the Wedding Photographer forum for some responses.

Seems strange to want to sell a camera simply because it's losing value. Arguably the D3 is going to lose far less value in raw $$$ terms now it's an older model than the more expensive D800 will lose when its successor comes out.

Well I'm not a full time photographer so I like to keep my investments up.

Plus I like my d600. So I'm sure the 800 is even better

Plus the d800 has faster AF, better DR and IQ

I second shoot for a friend and use a D3s and a D800. I use the D3s about 90% of the wedding and the D800 when I shoot from the back of the church with the 70-200.
Everyone has their opinions and likes, etc., but I'd say get a used D3s for not much more than a new D800. The extra low light ability is really nice in dark churches when no flash is allowed. It's at least a stop better than the D800, IMO. And, to me, that pro body just feels much better in my hands.
I used to have a D700 and it's about the same as a D3 for high iso. and when I think about it I'd say the D3/D700 were about the same as a D800 for that. Just my 2 cents.

This is bizarre reasoning. I'd assume that someone concerned with the investment value of a camera (a dubious concept in the digital era) would be keenly aware of depreciation and skeptical about chasing the latest model. Weird.

FWIW, I find the D600 to be a terrific wedding camera, especially paired with a D3. They have complementary strengths.
