p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Whats your Wide Angle lens on FF Canon?

Hey Guys!
Yesterday was shooting some scapes, when realized my 24-70 isn't wide enough, leg zooming wasn't helping :-)
So i looked a little at the options available:
1.Nikon 14-24 with adapter, probably the "best" option, but too pricy
2.CZ Distagon 21, is very good, but fixed FL, and not very cheap too :-)
3.Canon 17-40, the cheapest, the IQ is good, but not great...
4.?

Any suggestions?

Samyang 14mm 2.8. I either use that or my 24ts-e. I haven't used my 17-40 in ages.

Samyang 14 when I don't have to point upwards or downwards.

16-35 f2.8 mk2 for when I need something below 24 and can't use my 24-70. I will tilt this up or down slightly.

17TSE for when I need perspective control which is most times.

I also find many UWA look best at 16x9 aspect so I can plan on cropping off the bottom or top.

I would recommend 16-35mm.
I am a Nikon shooter but I hear that 16-35mm for Cannon is a superb lens.
Nikon 16-35 mm is an okay lens.
I do have 14-24mm but it is a pain in the neck when it comes to use the filters/polarizer.
Cheers!

Well, there aren't that much alternatives if the price matters. I thought about buying the 14mm lens from Samyang. But the downside is that you can't attach any filters because of the extreme concavity of the front element. Thus I decided to buy a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. The quality in the corners is visibly better compared to the 17-40mm f/4 but still not perfect ... and it is totally overpriced

It does sound like you're not too familiar with ultra-wide lenses, so I would suggest starting out with the Canon 17-40mm f4L until you figure out what you like. The quality is excellent, and it will be significantly more user-friendly than an adapted Nikon 14-24 zoom.

I owned a Canon 17-40 several years and was happy with it on an 1.3 crop body, but found it disturbingly soft in the corners/edges on FF. I tried a Rokinon(Samyang) 14/2.8 but found it too soft at f2.8 (night shots) for my tastes.

For FF I currently use Canon 17 TSE f4, Zeiss 21/2.8 and 24 TSE f3.5 II. Yes, yes they are all manual focus, auto aperture lenses. For WA I am almost always shooting on a tripod and use magnified Live View for focus. Shifting the 17 TSE will yield a pano whose fov will be equivalent to about 10 mm lens.

After researching alternatives, I purchased a Tokina 16-28 f/2.8. It is sharp (sharper than a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L original, but not sharper than the Mark II). It's best feature is that it has lower distortion (barrel or mustache) than the Mark II, the Canon 17-40 L, the Zeiss ZE Distagon 21 f/2.8, and the Nikon 14-24 (the Nikon is the best at 21mm). This makes it very useful for architecture, interiors, and landscapes (horizon lines).

I would not recommend the 17-40, but you could get one of the Tokina 16-28, Canon 16-35, Zeiss 21, or Nikon 14-24 and have a very fine lens.

I have the Canon 16-35L II, and highly recommend it.

If you are on a strict budget, I'd try the Tokina 16-28 that Monito mentioned.

16-35 is the obvious choice; in addition to that, I have a Sigma 14mm f/2.8 - an excellent lens!

Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 for me. Heavy and bulky, but excellent IQ

24 TSE II, then 16-35 II or 17 TSE. The 24 TSE II shift-stitches are quite nice for the extra pixels.

I'm using the 16-35 MkII, the ZE21right now. I plan to pick up the Samyang 14 soon. I would also love to have the 17ts-e though the price of the lens plus filter kit is very high.

I'd suggest the Tokina 16-28 or Canon 17-40. I don't think the IQ of the 17-40 is that bad if you're shooting stopped down. The corners are a little weak but the center is nice and sharp. The 17-40 can take filters while the 16-28 has a bulbous front and makes that more difficult.

Happy with my 16-35 f/2.8L II. Versatile as well.

Quite a bit better than my version I which was OK on a 1.3 cropper, but edges too soft on a full frame.

16-35mk2 is fine for most purposes.
17 TSE for the special needs.
8-15 fish for the really special needs.
