Looks like they're stepping up to the plate and handling this the proper way.

So is it even worth it to buy a D600 at this point (for $1,200-$1,300ish) if I'm thinking of a 3rd body (for video on a tripod)?

I bought one a used one with 148 shutter count. It now has 591 shutter count with no oil or dust issues. I just can't see sending in a perfectly good working camera.
With this announcement it seems maybe the fix does not work in all cases. I would just rather not take a chance. I'm not worried about resale. I just want a camera that works and mine does.
I do think it's great that Nikon has stated that they will replace any D600 they can't fix.

I think the odds of it being replaced by a new D610 are slim, because they state "upon which the above service [free cleaning, possible shutter + mirror assembly replacement] has been performed several times"... so they'll try really hard to fix it before replacing it. So don't get your hopes up, unless you're intentionally getting dust in there and don't mind shipping back and forth a few times.

@MitchSC: you might not see the oil or dust issues after that few shutter counts. If you don't mind finding out quickly or spamming off 1,000 clicks (low-quality JPEG), you can check the bottom of the mirror mechanism for wear. That'll quickly tell you if it'll get dust on the sensor.

Just picked up a D600 for 3rd body.

^Took them long enough. The mistake of not acknowledging the problem in the first place, or even when the ['due to demand from customers for faster FPS/improved quiet'] D610 was released just meant it cost them so much more in terms of reputation, PR, and sales.

.

Thanks for the info. I will keep a check on that as the shutter count increases.

As they should. While they're at it they should fix there customer service dept. and lose the term "Impact Damage" for everything that comes in for warranty service.
