p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bornean Greater Crested Fireback

During our Borneo trip we spent 4 days in Mulu National Park exploring the famous caves and doing a few jungle treks. This wasn't an area that was supposed to be all that good for birds or primates and was more for caving. However, they did have a tower hide constructed that got you up into the canopy. I spent most mornings and late afternoons up in the hide and for the most part it was fairly unproductive. However, the first afternoon, during a torrential downpour I did see this large bird (about 2 feet tall) also hanging out in the canopy trying to keep dry.

These photos aren't of the highest quality but I doubt this species has been shared on FM very often, if ever, so here it is. This is a male, if you couldn't tell by all the bright colours

Thanks for looking,
Geoff

Pushing the 1DX ISO to the limit...

So the second is much too noisy...what!!!!!!! 51200 AND 1/40s...that's a remarkable testament to both photographer and camera. The others at more "reasonable" iso (who would have thought 6400 and 10,000 were reasonable just a very short time ago) are excellent considering it either was raining or just rained and the canopy cut out 95% of the light. Despite that you got some very nice shots at looooow shutter speeds...this looks like photographic lighting from hell....nicely done Geoff to pull these off...and a very pretty bird to boot.

Great shots especially considering the challenging conditions. I like the first one best. I might try to add just a little more contrast.

Thanks Eric, don't worry, I do have better quality stuff coming soon after I finish off the deleting phase of my editing. I was impressed with the 51200 for giving me a shot that at least you can tell what type of bird it is I shot these on my monopod so the 1/40 is a testament to Canon's newest IS system, not so much to my skill

Wow, these are great images, Geoff. Your technique is top notch to shoot at that slow SS and high ISO. Awesome work

Thanks Birdie, the rain was pouring in the first shot that helped with the mood I think.

Very nice despite the conditions Geoff. I think I detect a tiny bit of noise in 2 though. 3 is the winner for me ~ Ron

I'll give you a wow for perseverance and for shooting when most of us would have said the hell with it!!! Way to go Geoff. I didn't know the ISO knob went that far

Great work getting images of this delightful bird, Geoff.
I did about three minutes of editing to #1 and really liked the results.
With your permission I'd like to post it.
Please PM me if it's okay.

Push your ISO, push your PP

Are you having a 'rain sale' on your gear now

What happened to your flash??

You went to the extremes for these shots, for that I say bravo Geoff!

Impressive range for a camera; also proves how much you can stretch with good technique. Very unique bird, never seen anything like it.
Thanks for sharing,
