For those of you that blog or post ring shots for any particular client... will you ever retouch out inclusions or other gemological imperfections?

I'm no jeweler, but if I see something that is displeasing to my eye and takes away from the photo - a scratch, imperfection, dust, whatever - I'll remove it. That comes more from a quality of photo point of view though, not because my client might take umbrage with the offending mark. (And that may be the first time I've ever used the word 'umbrage.')

I've never done that with a stone though I certainly have removed blemishes on the band. I suppose I would if something bothered me.

Now I wonder if anyone makes the rock bigger than it was lol. The thought never even occurred to me until just this moment.

Are you sure you are seeing gemological imperfections and not just dust/grime?

I've never seen a stone with imperfections bad enough to show up in a photo; it would have to be a super-close macro shot and a big imperfection to be visible.

I'd clean up dust/grime/scratches on the band if they were detracting from the photo

If it calls for it, I will.

Yeah, if it needs it I will do it.

No big deal in my book.

Once I got an engagement ring under the extension tube and it looked weirdly different...turns out it was glass. That shot didn't come out too impressively.

Having been in the diamond industry for 20 plus years before becoming a photographer I can say for sure no one buys a diamond wanting the inclusions to show. Hide it ASAP. Like showing a bride a giant pimple she didn't know she had on the wedding day. Just a reason for disappointment.
