p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Black-handed (Geoffroy's) Spider Monkey in Flight | |
After 10 trips to Costa Rica, I finally managed to photograph a spider monkey. While I have seen and photographed capuchin's, howlers and squirrel monkeys, the spider monkey has been an elusive target for me. Having seen them only once in marginal light on the Osa Peninsula, this species (like the jaguar and tapir) have been unobtanium for me.
During my recent travels with my students on a research excursion, we managed to bump into a troop of spider monkeys traveling rapidly through the dry Guanacaste forest. While I tried to get a decent shot, the branches and bright background left me thinking that this would be a lost opportunity. Just when I was about to give up, one monkey got separated from the troop and was forced to improvise. I quickly realized that it was going to leap through an open space. Not knowing if I could expose correctly for the shot, I opened up my exposure by +2/3 and panned as it moved from one tree to another. I managed to nail 2 of 5 with this being the one real keeper.
Costa Rica is one tough place to shoot, but my absolute favorite place on the planet!
thanks for looking and regards,
bruce
