Going to Songkran in Bangkok again. Last time I was using my underwater camera, which worked ok, but I'd like to take the 5D out this time. Any recommendations that fall somewhere between a rain jacket and an underwater case? A couple pics below for what goes on - it's a war zone. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at an outex housing - www.outex.com
I'm going to a Holi event this weekend, where they throw colored powders in the air, and will use the outex with my 5dm3.

It's crazy to bring any DSLR to Songkran in Bangkok. Hundreds of people even die because of Songkran every year. And most foreigners that lives in Bangkok will leave Thailand or stay in their apartment for a few days if it's possible.
There will be thousends of people that would love to fill your camera with water and then just laugh at you. And if you are in a tourist spot it's even worse.

That looks really nice! I have an Ewa-Marine U-BP, and it definitely keeps stuff dry, but it's big, bulky, and not very user friendly. One of those outex housings will look just about right on my sea kayak.

The housing don't help that much when they throw their plastic bags that are filled with a mix of water and big ice cubes And most people throw buckets of water. They even use hoses..........

My reply was aimed for the O.P. I don't belive they will throw ice cubes and water on you in your kayak

I think if your 5D is insured, and you're looking to replace it with a 5DIII, go for it. Otherwise, no.

don't take chance. I dropped my t2i in the ocean for few seconds and it is not repairable.

Hang on - OP what lens will you use?

A 5D and a 24-70 f2.8L is a good match. You can then think about investing in a Think Tank Hydrophobia, Optech or something else.

This year I'll be shooting Songkhran with a 1D3 and 16-35 f2.8L II without protection. I may even take the 85 f1.8.

Your best protection is awareness - don't go too close to crowds of obvious pissed goons and high bargirls - and some phrases spoken clearly and loudly with hand gestures.

I wouldn't recommend our Hydrophobia for this. They're throwing buckets of water directly at the lens! That's just nuts. The Hydrophobia is great for rain, but I don't think it's wise to subject the front lens element (even with a UV filter) to a wall of water. It's going to seep pass our cover and possibly the seals on the lens. I'd suggest an underwater housing. They're expensive, but that's the price of admission if you want to walk out with functioning gear.

I agree, completely.

I have two TT Hydrophobia for shooting sports and etc. in the rain. They're great, even in a sustained downpour, but you need something waterproof for full immersion, for the crazy stuff described above.

The Ewa-Marine mentioned earlier by Ian and myself would probably work fine, but it's a kind of clunky thing to use. The Outex flexible housing mentioned by acktdi looks really good. In fact, I bought one last night. It's for my sea kayak and snorkeling, not for Songkran.

Yesterday I bought two Optech rainsleeves on sale - I'll be using them.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a dedicated cover rather than the cheap Optech - including the Hydrophobia. Because, if you want to shoot a wall of water coming at your camera that's your call. But in reality most of it will be very similar to heavy rain.

I would not do it. I have been in Phuket and Bangkok. Either a underwater housing or just a cheap P/S in my pocket.

I'm keeping one shoulder free, so Paul will have something to cry on when he gets back from Songkran.

Just for you I took the 5D3 and Sigma 35mm with the 135 f2L - a little less water resistant than the 1D3.

Well spoken. I have never been there but it would be stupid to take along the 5D, or any camera for that matter.
