Am I that rare a being? Again someone complains about zoom rings being "backward." Where is it written that all zoom rings must work in a certain direction? Maybe it's on the Rosetta Stone and certain companies missed it?

No, I don't get all whacked out of shape about zoom rings.

Do you use the Sigma zoom at the same time you use a Nikon zoom? That's when it confuses me - when I have a sigma zoom on one and a Nikon on the other.

Same here; I got used to the Tammy quickly, but having it on one camera and a Canon UWA zoom on the other got confusing enough.

Same for me too! When i was shooting both Canon and Nikon side by side at the same gig, I really liked the Sigma lenses. Same zoom direction and focus as the Canon. I often couldn't remember which camera I had to my eye without thinking about it, and everything felt great! with both turning the same way

For the 2 years prior to that, Nikon lenses drove me nuts. Every Single Time I picked up a Nikon I would turn the zoom and focus ring in the wrong direction first. It is just muscle memory, but it causes an interruption to the flow when you have to stop and correct yourself.

+++

That said - I just pulled the trigger on a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR II. After shooting the Canon version I and II for 10 years, and going to full frame on Nikon, I just couldn't resist any longer. I am so, so spoiled by great glass.

I will probably add the Nikon 24-70 2.8 too. I need those two 2.8 zooms for events, and I may as well get the pair. It's only $3,000 ... used ...

Cheers!
M.

Lots of chat on here, but decided lack of photos...... Here's a couple from a trail ride I did yesterday. Took my D800 and 24-105 with me and snagged some shots of the jump boys doing their thing. The AF speed on the 24-105 is frankly astounding and I discovered it'll also hold focus while zooming.

This trail looks familiar! Was this taken at Swinley before they filled it in!?

Hi there, my first comment on this forum.

I feel a bit like some guys have decided which one should be better before they even had a look on those.

My opinion: The Sigma 24-105 f4 is a really very sharp, amazing construction lens. If only all my Nikkor lenses would have the same build quality. And yes, the zoom ring keeps its position even if you shoot downwards.

I made a detailed check for myself as I am paid for my photos and the Sigma is really very sharp on the edges. Although on my Full Frame Nikon it is really vignetting a lot. I have to add that I use it almost always wide open and this can be the reason. (For me it is not a problem as I make a vignetting on the photos due to my use of the photos.

If you are a Nikon user, the reverse zoom and focus ring is a bit annoying, but will not make you go mad, I can assure it.

Mine has got a squiky noise sometimes (really just sometimes) when I use autofocus from a very near object to infinity almost. But not always and it does nothing to the image quality but of course you can get upset with it.

The Sigma has an issue as well - I have to set the camera to around a +0.7 exposure compensation due to the lens. I have read that other have the same "problem". When you use the Sigma, it will be darker.

As a real estate shooter, I use this lens when I make some "detail shot, which has to "step out" the crowd of the other photos of mines and different coloring, different vignetting, darkening not even an issue for me. Why? 1- because it really makes amazing perfect photos, 2 - as I want to have different ones anyway.

It is just an opinion - I would go with the Nikkor 24-120 f4 BUT the Sigma is really a very good lens. it is not like deciding between a Dacia and a Mercedes (this is why I laugh on so many of you as you say one of it is an exact winner). In case you use only this lens as on a trip or vacation, no problem, any of them is gonna be fine.

But if you have to match the Sigma 24-105 photos to the others, you will see difference. I don't mean it is worse (and this is the point!!!) it is just different.

I shoot (the ones which I shoot everyday) with Nikkor 14-24, 50 1.8G, PC E 24 tilt shift, 105 2.8 VR2 - and the Sigma. The Sigma is just a bit different.

But really, it is an exceptional lens and my opinion is nothing about its quality. It is a great lens, you know what? Maybe better than the 24-120 Nikkor!!!

Toss a coin... both "work". I prefer the build
and the wide open sharpness of the Sigma. YMMV

Why do you get bent out of shape by such minor things? This is like getting bent out of shape about the twist ties on a loaf of brad being twisted differently. Are you that tightly wound that this bothers you?

I work with the 24-120/4 just about everyday. it does quite well and does not require me to second guess my choice.

yup, people just gotta push the irrelevance factor. I just prefer the range of the Nikon. it manages to do it with a 77mm front end vs the 82mm.
