I am building a few 1" thick light boxes for my studio and was wondering what the best paper wuld be to use that would allow the light to shine through. Typical photo paper wont work obviously.

They do make translucent photo paper (vellum). If you do a Google search for that it should steer you in the right direction.

Rosco, the people who make gels, make an extensive selection of diffusion material that would probably work very well.
