p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Show me your happy accidents

I was discussing with some friends a few days ago about a shot I took recently. They loved it. I love it. But it wasn't what I intended it to be originally. I had the vision in my head, but the way the image came out was even better than expected. Receiving compliments on something that was a total accident is something that I think happens more often than we admit. Maybe we're shooting in a priority mode, and accidentally get some fantastic blur motion blur. Or a flash pops at half power but gives a moody vibe. Or it could even be one of our subjects causing a ruckus and ending up with a beautifully hilarious shot.

So, show me what you've got.

Haha. This is the one I had a pretty good return on.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have aligned their t-shirt colors with the background. I actually would have alternated them. And to be honest, I wasn't even thinking about their t-shirt colors in this shot.

Now your turn, Hoff!

I've always loved this shot that Amy got. It was a total light misfire, but I think it's better this way...

I've always liked this one. I thought I had placed my light far enough behind the tree on the right so that it would not be in the shot.

Everyone thinks I was a genius to capture the sun in the shot.

Robin,

I won't say yes.

But I won't say no.

I kid. I kid.

This shot could fall into that category. I just had my camera held above my head firing over the crowd. There was no skill involved, just luck and being in the right place at the right time. It's one of my all time favorite open dancing shots...

If those are the rules for this, then I'll include 90% of my portfolio.

All this time I thought you were purposeful. It makes much more sense now!

This does make me wonder sometimes, when the greats just happen to luckily grab a shot. In my head, they are calculating and always thinking ahead. But as weddings dictate, sometimes you just can plan for every moment. Or even half of them.

My on-camera flash batteries died, and I ended up going large aperture and using the video guy's light for some dancing shots that turned out to be extremely emotional. Couldn't have been more of an accident, but now I try to create this effect using my own light, haha!

This was not the shot I was after. I asked the bridesmaid if she wouldn't mind straightening the veil out. I was just getting the 5D out of the back and I looked up to see this, so I just shot - no time to check settings, just trusted.

Shot was about 3 stops under! All fixed in post

I ran out of film at the end of a wedding (there was a second getting it also), so I just wound up a few frames and kept on shooting
