p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 1D Mark 3 (Mark III) question ???

Hello all,

I have been out of touch for quite a while and have a few questions about the canon 1D Mark III.

What is the starting serial number for the latest iteration after the fixes to the known 1D Mark III problems?

What is the going price for a clean copy with low shutter actuations?

I know these questions have been discussed to death before but I seem to have lost touch with the search functions here

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to get a nice copy for around $1,000 and no need to worry about the fix because Canon is still fixing them free of charge. Someone here just sent one in last month and Canon took care of everything.

I spent a few months tracking down one from someone that also did the same sort of photography as me, especially BIF work and was really impressed by it's AF abilities. Certainly better than my 1D II and 7D. I think if it's had the fix done or is post fix you'll be fine. My serial number was a fairly late one and started with a 57 IIRC.

IMO 1D III is best value Canon my a mile these days.

Pixel Perfect,

I decided to keep my 7D and sold my 1D III (S/N 549XXX) 4 years ago

I agree with you that the 1D III is the best value today.

I am in no hurry and wait for the right deal to come along.

Thank you very much for your reply

The only piece of advice I'd give a new buyer is to think long and hard about living with 10MP.

10MP and crappy LCD; also lack of modern features like autoISO. When I got mine, the seller had tons of paperwork from Canon confirming the AF fix

I wouldn't have the 1D3 as my ONLY camera body, but as an inexpensive specialist body, it is unmatched at its current price point.

For non-technical shooting where you don't need 20-36MP images, it works amazingly well with smooth renditions from its large pixels. (The 1D2 was lovely also -- I miss it, but not enough to quit the 1D3!)

10MP from a quality camera is still quite impressive!

If you have the right glass for the job, 10MP is plenty. I have made 4'x6' (yes, foot) prints with a lowly 4.2MP pro camera that are still hanging in racing garages to this day.

the 10MP limitation really hits you more when you are trying to crop; but having more resolution also helps if an image is not tack sharp and you downsize.

I have been tempted to get rid of my 1D MKIII on and off for the past few years but can't find anything that is comparable in the sub-$1500 range (my camera budget isn't what it used to be).

Sure, it's a 10MP camera but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

On the plus side, you have a weather sealed body, 12fps which is great for sport, wildlife or anything else that moves, and an AF system that easily keeps pace with things that move. ISO performance is good but agree is somewhat limited (don't particularly like passing 1600) and battery life is outstanding.

Paid $3K for mine and at the current used pricing points, I agree with others in that its the best value today.

Proper glass, plus proper technique overcomes both of these.
