p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Choice of lens, I'm confused. Please help!

Hi guys, i really need your advice!

I currently have a D7000 with a 17-55 2.8 and a few manual lenses. My photographic work varies between taking commercial pictures in studio, studio portraits and outdoor artistic shots. I intend to buy a Nikon D800E in the coming weeks. I am very hesitant about choosing lenses. I face two choices with my budget. 1 - A 24-70mm Nikon that covers major focal lengths.OR Choose prime lenses. 50mm 1.8G, 85mm 1.8G, 105mm 2.8G and a wide angle lens. What is the most important for me its the sharpness.

I already own AI-S manuals lenses 28 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 55 2.8, 85mm 2, 105 2.5. I use these with my video Sony FS-100 with the 17-55mm for some other works (DX zoom is perfect for FS100)

I like these old manual lenses, but its a bit hard to focus with d7000. I dont know how it will go on D800E

The thing is: i'll have to sell all or part of this to finance the purchase of new full frame lenses.

I'm so confuse.

What you suggest me?

Assuming used prices:
Nikon 28/1.8 $450
Nikon 50/1.8 $175
Nikon 85/1.8 $400

With a few hundred left to spare you could snag something wide like the Tokina 16-28, or long Nikon 80-200.

+1 This is a very good suggestion if you like primes and in a studio setting should be just fine.

Personally I would go for the 24-70 and then salt in primes as I can. The zoom provides greater flexibility and for studio work things are usually at f/8. Outdoors, f/2.8 gives plenty of isolation for most needs, but the primes have their place ... this the reason I shoot both.

Yes, I have expensive zooms and primes because they have their own special purpose. Based on your current shooting style, if you use your zoom, then get a zoom. If you use your primes, then get primes. If you use both, get both The 1.8 primes are excellent and relatively cheap.

My confusion is due to the fact that I need a lens that covers wide angle and portraits in DX for video shooting with the FS-100. I may found a cheap 18-70mm for that.

Is the 24-70 heavy? Are you satisfied with the sharpness? Do you see a difference with primes?

The problem is i use both both with the upgrade, i'll not be able to get both

The IQ of the 24-70 is very good, but not quite as good as my 85 1.4 or 35 1.4. It really auto focuses quickly, however, and is heavier than primes.

What do you shoot? How important is image quality (IQ)? There are many lenses that you can get cheap and there are reasons they are cheap. It comes down to your IQ tolerance level and pocket book. I feel certain that for most family stuff, a 24-70 will rarely be off your camera. It is heavy and expensive (even used), but a very good image producer.

From a purely monetary and time saving stand point, I would personally buy the 24-70 first and if I didn't like it after a few months sell it off to buy the primes with a little left over. Buy the primes first, then that's possibly three different sales you'll have to put up with and then extra cash to fork over. Primes will be sharper though, simple fact.

I had (and sold) a 85 1.8 and 50 1.8 because I never seem to take the 24-70 off of the D600 when shooting in that range.

IQ is really important to me. Most sharp as possible! May be i can mix primes and zoom if i buy used. In this case, may be a 85mm and 105mm and 28-70mm. Does the older 28-70mm will it be as good as 24-70mm on a D800E?

By the way, thanks a lot for help guys!

The extra 4mm on the wide side seals the deal for the 24-70 in my book. The 28-70 is discontinued, but it produces good images.
