p.1 #1 · 18MP Nikon 1 V3 with 20fps continuous AF announced

Official: 18MP Nikon 1 V3 with 20fps continuous AF
Nikon just announced their new mirrorless camera, the Nikon 1 V3.
Pairing together an enhanced 18.4MP sensor with Nikon's new EXPEED 4A image processor, it achieves the world's fastest continuous frame rate at 20 fps in continuous AF. When using fixed focus, the burst rate soars to a mind-boggling 60 fps!

The Nikon 1 V3's hybrid AF system uses 171 AF points for contrast detection and 105 AF points for phase detection. The 1"-type CMOS sensor lacks an AA filter and its max ISO reaches 12,800. Other bonus features include a tilting 3-inch touchscreen LCD, full manual exposure control, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi.

The Nikon 1 V3 will be sold as a bundled with the new 10-30mm PD-Zoom lens, grip, and EVF for $1,199.

Why does Nikon refuse to compete with the other mirrorless offerings? I would totally buy something like this if it had at least a DX sensor...

It's $1200 with 10-30 power zoom, grip, and EVF full bundle. The body only price is what everyone cares about, but that isn't an option yet. A bit spendy as a kit IMO, however if that sensor is top notch along with 20 FPS with AF tracking they should be able to charge a bit of a premium, since nobody else has that. Heck, the 3 year old V1's speed and AF still hasn't been matched by any other mirrorless manufactuer.

I'm not sure they could do that with a DX sensor, and is likely one reason why they are CX. They have something nobody else has with that AF and speed. You don't need DX to compete in mirrorless. M43 is thriving, and Sony has been very successful with their $750 RX100 P&S camera, using the same size sensor as CX format. Big sensors also mean big heavy leses - look at the Sony NEX system, if you want a tele zoom it starts to defeat the purpose of a small, compact, camera .

Good on Nikon for releasing something truly interesting, and on paper, incredibly impressive. Lets hope it lives up to the specs, and for the body only price to be in the $500-700 range (kit lens price separately is $299, grip and VF prices unknown).

The Coolpix A viewfinder is a $400 accessory, so I'm glad they aren't asking those kind of dollars.

Another thing I was thinking is it's likely to get another $125 dive rated underwater housing from Meike/Polaroid that worked so well with the V1/J1.

I can't explain the 1-series 70-300VR at $999 though. You can buy a FT-1 and 55-300VR for half the price, granted it would be bulkier.

If you are the kind of guy who burns a lot of shoe leather, humping your gear in the woods, it sounds like the new V3 might be a heck of a wildlife camera with a f2.8 70-200 VR lens mounted. I'll be curious to see how the auto focus and maximum useable ISO work out. I have been thinking about an alternative to my heavy pro bodies.

I want this camera but I agree with CanadaMark, I'll wait for a body-only option. The included accessories are nice, I just probably won't ever use them.

This is everything I wanted EXCEPT despite rumors that is not a standard hot shoe! Nikon needs to make a damn adapter or something. Also the switch to microSD is a head scratcher.

But I'm too satisfied with my Df to throw money down. If this only came out a few months earlier. Still got my D3 for speed and my Df for everything else, no room for a small compact.

Also $1000 for the 70-300mm (196-810) is insane.

I'm looking forward to the tests. For me the specs are very promising.
Especially the AF looks very good. I'm curious about the high ISO as the V2 is not really usable above ISO400
Price is a little steep, but not as high as the previous versions when they came out. And as alway the price will come down after 6 months or so. I'm sure there will be a body only option (although I want it with viewfinder and grip).

If the new 70-300 is a good lens it will be by far the cheapest option for wildlife shooting.
I'm now shooting with a D800E + grip + 500VR + TC's (about $13,000.00!!) and still no zoom capabilities.

As of 55-300 or 70-300 with FT-1 is a much cheaper option I can only say did you try it?
Only centre point AF and not in the same league by a large margin as AF with native lenses.

I'm using a V2 + FT-1+ 80-400G and it's only usable in good light and static objects.

It's not likely I will give up my D800 + 24-70 and 70-200 but for the long end it could.

It out-spec's the D7100.

Okay, maybe those who prefer OVF and DX sensor would disagree, otherwise on paper this may be their best non-full frame option.

This camera + the new 70-300 lens could be a great combo for airshows, which is one of my main interests. I tried to look up the buffer size but couldn't see it. Would be interesting to know more about the sensor.

Very best,

Douglas

I'd really like them to not muck up the 70-300mm. If they can actually achieve the kind of acuity needed by that dense sensor, it'd be a heck of a setup.

I've tried the other 1-series cameras on my 70-300mm VR and the IQ is just nothing to write home about. It's okay, certainly a nice option to get so much focal length with so little weight, but not something I'd use every day.

They would have to change the mount otherwise it will end up looking like the Pentax K-01. In other words it would probably be at least twice as thick.

I really like my nikon J1 for ease of getting the shot. This might be just the upgrade I want since a d400 doesnt exist.

3.5-5.6 kit lens is disappointing. For a small sensor camera, I think it's reasonable to ask for a 2.8-4 kit lens.

If they use the same battery (or at least can use the same charger) as Df / D5300, it would be a better companion to their DSLR.

IMO Micro Four Third is still a better option, more bodies, Panasonic GM-1 for small size, Olympus EM-1 if I want features and speed (although not 20fps, but 10fps is plenty for me), much better lens line-up (but only up to 300mm).

It is not really a bad product, just bad pricing.

Interesting ... so when you add the grip, you have TWO shutter buttons in the same orientation? Or am I missing something here?

If they had put a bigger sensor in it so it could compete with the M43 cameras it would have been a winner
