I couldn't find a willing model to test some lights I recently came by so decided to sit down on the other side of the lens myself. Composition and focus was quite difficult with a manual focus lens and having to constantly get up.

Thoughts on anything but lighting in particular would be helpful.

Thank you.

Lighting to cast one side of a face completely into shadow is sort of a specialized case. Hard to comment on a specialist without more information about purpose/intent. Generally, good lighting would illuminate both sides, at least to some meaningful degree. There are also cameras now with live view that allow the image to be displayed on a monitor that makes self portraits much less difficult.

The intent was to do exactly that - light half the face and have it be a bit of a low key lit photograph. All 3 people who promised they would be here bailed on me so I tried the self portrait but I don't really take pictures of myself. Just wanted to do it as a proof of concept.

One more question, is your ear that much lighter than your face or is it a lighting artifact?

Nope. Same color. Did not even notice how bright the ear was.

You used split lighting and the mood is fine for that. The subject has specular highlights from sweat/grease (I assume) on his skin - a paper towel or handkerchief would have come in handy. FWIW

Great shot, I would have taken it it minus the glasses to avoid reflection and give it more of a raw feel.
