I've heard some random discussion concerning problems with slow focus with this lens. Not sure if they are based on real facts or just anecdotal observations. Does anyone have any specifics? Thinking of ordering one, but don't want to be disappointed later.

Interesting to see the results on a Nikon-camera.

Currently I shoot with 70-300VR. I am sure this Tammy is going to be much better than that especially from 300-600!

So I won't complain about slow focus.

I have a guy I shoot with weekly (birds in flight) out at our local birding hole. He took delivery about 3 weeks ago and I've had time to look-through, shoot with and handle this lens.

The very mention of these numbers combined gets one pretty worked up about the possibilities of the images one could produce, and on a prosumer Canon body.... I have to say, at this price point, I'm not unhappy with the overall result.

It's not 70-200 VR focus kind of fast.. But it's got some legs to it and has thus far made some good images. To me, it's kind of fugly.. as a lens goes. But that's a cosmetic thing and shouldn't be an issue for anyone. It's about the results.

I would not buy this lens merely because its not fast enough for use in low light if I needed it to be. The super-tele primes are a better investment in my mind. But for the casual shooter looking to add flexibility in outdoor scenarios, it's a good deal

I did carefully consider this lens, but ended up getting a Nikon 80-400mm AFS. This is a great lens and is excellent on the D7100. True, it only goes to 400mm and not 600mm, but since I don't photo small birds I am happy with the more compact size and slightly faster f5.6.

The weight difference is always going to be there. But as far as the aperture and even image quality, the only fair comparison is at 400mm, where the Tamron matches the Nikon with f/5.6 and probably similar IQ as well. With that being equal, you are trading the extra weight for an extra 200mm. There's still a decision to be made, but it's a smaller decision.

Geeez, I can't even consider this lens. 6.3 is slow slow, dim and slow. And it's not Nikon. Good luck.

I would suggest that you read the several threads about this lens on the Canon Forum. Many have returned the lens due to the failure of it to auto-focus properly in AI Servo mode in the 500-600mm range on many different Canon bodies.

On a 7D and 1D Mk IV, the lens would simply not change focus when aimed from a distant subject to a closer subject.

Nikon owners had better hope the same problem will not occur with certain Nikon bodies.

Great lens if you don't want to shoot moving subjects.

Canon shooters were obviously the guinea pigs It seems likely the delay in releasing the Nikon mount is Tamron trying to get the AF issues sorted out. We'll see how successful they are soon enough.

Well, Tamron does have a new 80-400G to compete with on Nikon- their new tele-super-zoom better damn well work, at a minimum :-p

Somewhere I saw a post that Tamron had paid Nikon for a license to the camera/lens interface, while they had to reverse engineer the Canon connection.

Too bad you can't provide a link for that, otherwise it is just hearsay and speculation.
