....Satisfaction! Mick Jaguar is an amazing hunter who, despite, being disadvantaged by having only one functioning eye he was able to ambush and take down a large caiman.
Here are a few of Mick...both his good and bad side. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...in this case only the left eye!
Eric

Mick the Jaguar badly need an eye surgeon. I am surprised how close you got to these animals. This set conveys the majesty as well as the hard life of the jaguar.
Another terrific set Eric.

#3 is my favorite of these exceptional images, Eric.
Why in the world would two super predators fight to the death?
More particularly, why would Mick go to such lengths to even attack a fairly large caiman?
Are caimans regular food items to jaguars?
I'd be very surprised if they were- considering that big jaguars can kill anything they can catch, i.e. capybaras- where chances of injury are much less.

Amazing capture, Eric. #4 is very powerful. I feel bad about the injury of that cat. I wonder if it affects its hunting skill.

Poor boy,

he's got ticks..... But he's so handsome, though an surgeon for that eye would probably be a good thing.

He's still a great hunter I understand

Wonderful shots & I'm sure for you a wonderful experience

I think Mick needs a prosthesis...he might not see any better but his chances with the ladies would be improved significantly...unless they like that rugged look. We actually tried to keep our distance as that really ensures that the cats go on with their daily activities unstressed and naturally. But in the last shots, the river narrowed to only a few yards and it was considering crossing so we got to see him much closer as he came through the grasses..Thanks Harsha!

LADIES...pure and simple. There is no food competition as it is plentiful...territory may be another bone of contention but ultimately, the need to breed is paramount and leads to such confrontations. And in this part of Brazil, the Pantanal, caiman are regularly preyed upon.

Thanks Ken...it was such a shame to see him in that state but it obviously didn't affect his ability to hunt.

Thanks Tam...he seems to be getting along just fine. About a month after we took his photo and got to name him he killed a caiman in broad daylight...the video has gone viral...I wish I had taken it but at least I can feel like a proud papa since we named him.

Thanks Tim...they do seem to adapt real well to adversity...I suspect the high density of prey makes it a bit easier.

Thanks Lil...I wonder how he'd look with an eye patch and a parrot on his shoulder
He is one tough dude and seems to fare just fine with his one good eye.

Never underestimate those that overcome......................
No replacement for experience and the will to survive! Great shots of this cat that is overcoming a disadvantage.

I'm always thrilled when I get to see your pictures, especially something like this that shows how tough life can be for them, but how they can cope with it. I like the stealth mode of #2.

More great stuff Eric. The cat is a beauty, and very well captured. The injury sure seems to have not affected his hunting skills ~ Ron
