I know I'm jumping the gun here in the Northern Hemisphere!

But look at this evidence.

Perhaps these sorts of images will persuade Mother Nature to release her icy grip on much of our northern world?

Chastise me if you must, but have pity on us in the drought-stricken, sunny and warm Southwest of the United States! It seems like every post I was making on the Winter thread was an unsympathetic parody to the rest of the world. My daughter Tracey went to Disneyland in Anaheim yesterday -- around 80F! Come on! That's Summer, right?

Who doesn't love the first irises coming up?

Happy Spring!

(Feel free to keep posting on the Winter thread as long as there is snow, ice, and whatever else shows up in wintertime!)

Here's something a little different. No, it's not just a dead-boring photo -- we see those all the time!

The crops shows what is interesting to me -- the back-lit blowing pollen captured as "star-streaks" with a strong wind and 1/200 shutter speed. It's all across the frame, captured in that plane of focus against the OOF background. I've never seen that before. Compare to the thin spiderwebs in the upper left corner of the frame.

Why is my nose congested and eyes burning?

Shot on Sunday. Complete winter garb, but I'm optimistic.

Jeremy -- I absolutely love that shot! Playful and foreboding! Very Coen Brothers-esque!

John -- Nice color with the branches and bird.

The last few days have shown signs of spring in the UK - I gave the grass its first cut of the year at the weekend!
Here are some (wild) daffs from the New Forest.

Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) with offspring....

Sandhill Cranes mate for life and raise their chicks together as pairs. This one appears to have lost her mate sometime after nesting this year.... She is a single parent trying to feed 2 chicks where oftentimes there is only one chick and two parents.

Their biggest enemy is us and our cars.

Evolution has not yet taught Sandhill Cranes that 3,000-pound steel boxes traveling at 80mph are dangerous, so they wonder out on roads as if nothing can hurt them. To make things even worse, their gray coloration makes them difficult to see, especially at dawn and dusk which happens to be the most active time for birds in general.

Sandhill Cranes tend to raise their young not far from where they hatch; until the chicks can fly, the parents are voluntarily grounded. Unlike many other birds, the chicks can walk early and most of their "raising" takes place wondering around on foot looking for food as opposed to sitting in a nest waiting to be fed. This makes them vulnerable.

I've been observing this family on both sides of the same 1/2 mile stretch country road for the past week or so..... I never saw the 2nd parent, but so far, noone else has gone missing.... Let's hope it stays that way....

Again, if you live in an area where these magnificent birds nest, please keep an eye out for them while driving as well as critters in general.

Winter? Spring? Spring? Winter?? Around here, we aren't sure. One days it's in the 50°s and then next day we get 5 inches of snow and 10°.

A creature has emerged to check things out. I myself will take the 5 inches of snow and 10° any day of the week.

Andy, that looks like my backyard. We got 2 inches of new snow last night. On top of the 3 feet we already have.

I feel your pain!

Regards....Pete
