p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D

So I am heading to the SW next month with several good buddies. Going to be there for 8 days, camping the whole time. Main focus will be in the page area and grand staircase escalante.

I personally will have just the 14-24mm. One buddy has a 16-35, 24-85 VR and Tokina 90mm macro. The other buddy has 14-24, Sigma 24-105 and Nikon 70-200 f4. Needless to say, there are lenses I can use no problem. Ideally, I don't want to rent a lens - would rather buy and sell when I get back. I will find out my budget in a few days as I get my bonus.

The 80-200mm looks like a real gem, and can be had for a pretty good price. Thoughts on this for landscapes? I realize will overlap what our group will have, but might be a time when someone is using the 70-200.

Or is the 70-200f/4 better optically than the 80-200? f/2.8 would be cool for star trails. This will be mounted onto a D600.

Thanks for any help!

I have an 80-200 2.8 push pull lens and it is tack sharp on my D600. It isn't as fast to focus as the newer lenses but that shouldn't be an issue for your trip. Have fun.

The 2.8/80-200 AF-D was my bread and butter lens for years, used it on film bodies like the F2AS and F100, up to DSLR's like the D1 and D3.

Lovely lens be it a bit heavy and bulky (inevitable with a 2.8 lens of this focla length) Excellent IQ when stopped slightly down.

Unfortunately that's also it's weakness, when used fully open quite soft, which especially becomes apparent when used with high resolution camera's. This was the reason I sold my copy following the putchase of a D800, after using it for nearly 20 years, and upgraded to a 2.8/70-200 VRII

The 80-200 is awesome, but not nearly as sharp as the 70-200 f/4. It is also a lot heavier, too. I loved mine, but I don't miss it at all...

Can speak on 70-200/4 but 80-200D two rings is build like a tank !! Been all over with me back in days but took a beating like it was nothing
I would not hesitate to get it again

Hmm… the only situations I would use it w/o is for stars and such. But I have thought about the 70-200 2.8II, but my wife would kill me if I got that in the mail Maybe a rental…

I just picked up an 80-200 2.8D push pull a month or so ago, it's great...best part: it was $300...BOOM! nice and sharp, built well, focuses fast (enough) and accurate on my d700's / D3...best $300 I've spent in a long time!!

I've owned the 70-200 f/4 and just sold the 80-200 2-ring. For portraits, I'd pick the 2.8 lens.. for landscapes I'd pick the 70-200 f/4. The instant MF override is helpful for landscapes, star trails and such. It has a sharper bite and better color. It's essentially a mini-70-200 VRII.
