I like my canon 50mm 1.8 but I'm looking for something wider on my canon crop body, Ideally in the $500 range.

I'm trying to decide between the canon 28mm 1.8, the canon 35mm f2, the sigma 30mm 1.4 or the rokinon 24mm f1.4.

Are the non-canon lenses even worth considering?

On a side note does anyone have any experience with the Sigma 18-35 1.8?

Thanks for any advice!

the Sigma 30 is a great little lens .
dont know about the newer 'ART' series version but I doubt its any worse and would likely be even better

Btw I have the canon 40mm 2.8 stm. Unfortunately it is neither wide enough or fast enough on my crop for my liking.

Sigma 30 f/1.4 Art series or 18-35 f/1.8 Art. If I owned a 1.6x crop and could force myself to buy a crop lens it would the Sigma zoom any day.

If you find 40 not wide enough, 35 won't do the job either.

I've the 28 f1.8 and enjoy using it, but if I was buying today, hands down it would be the sigma 18-35 f1.8, all reviews and images seem to suggest it is fantastic...

As others have said, the 18-35/1.8 Art is the best of the group- from DxOMark, for reference:

It's really only behind in vignetting performance at 28mm, as one might expect- and with 28mm not being at either extreme of the zoom range, distortion is better controlled than either prime .

It's great for a lot of things- just be careful to stick to their actual test results. Their 'scores' can be a bit biased, as with any complex subject when attempting to reduce everything down to a number or small set of numbers .
