Far better to remove before shooting. The tip of a moistened toothpick should do the job. There is always the danger of damaging the fine detail of the subject so sometimes cloning may be the better option. Sometimes I shoot the subject as it is then clean it and take another shot.

This is one of my favourite types of subject to shoot.
