Great deal. None of the other online retailers have matched it yet.

I wonder how much of an upgrade this is over the 24-105/4 L.

Definitely better, especially if you care a lot about how it does near 24mm.

(there can be copy variation though, my second copy was definitely better anywhere away from the center, even the first bum one was better than the 24-105L I tried though (keeping in mind that I mostly focused on near 24mm performance))

Wow quite a fine price on it! I can't recall having seen it below $1000 before. Who would ever go for the new sigma with this one at this price? (I'm not even sure who would've when the f24-70 f/4 IS was at $1000 never mind this $799).

Thank you Fred, at that price it's a buy, although the extra reach of the 24-105 is attractive, this lighter lens will pair nicely with my 70-200 f4L IS and will complete my f4L zoom trio; 17-40L...all destine for a 6D next year

I thought the 24-70/4 IS was a dud, exhibiting poor performance at the middle of the zoom range. Did I miss something?

50mm is it's weakest point, but it's not like it's a disaster there and it's only a very small range right around 50mm where it's worse the rest of the range. Plus 50mm there are so many ways to get perfection on FF, even a $100 50mm 1.8. This pulls off 24mm well on FF, the holy grail for zooms on FF, and it's good at 70mm too (I'd say it actually has better edges on FF at 70mm than the 24-70 II, 70mm FF edges are where that lens is weakest).

anyway if the 24-70 f/4 IS a dud then the 24-105L is the mother, father, brother, sister of all duds IMO

definitely not for the first two shots, I was mostly concerned with whether it could pull off landscape, I might well have some for the last shot though (unless they got deleted already), I'll have to check

wide open, the edges won't be as good, especially not at 47mm, at f/4 I know the 24-70 II (and 24 1.4 II too for 24mm) definitely does better across the entire range (other than perhaps right near 70mm at the far edges); I forget but I think right near 50mm the edges like at least f/6.3 (and do best f/7.1-f/8 and up) and elsewhere at least f/5 (and definitely do best f/6.3 and up) on FF, although it somewhat depends upon what sort of shot, how the field curvature fits the scene and how far the subjects are and such. The 24-105 and tamron 28-75 2.8 aren't exactly FF edge kings at f/4 though either and the 24-105 doesn't get better as much as you stop down as this 24-70 f/4 IS does, at least not with the copies I've seen certainly not near 24mm, even at f/8 and f/10 I was never particularly pleased with any 24-105 near 24mm that I tried.

I succumbed, even though I already have the 24-105L. I have had 2 copies of the 24-105, but have never been happy with the heavy vignetting at the wide end. Hopefully this one is better in that regard (and less distortion too).

How bad is the sharpness of the 24-70 at 50mm compared with the 24-105?

If you read the lens rentals review, even though he did not directly compare the lenses at 50mm, the drop of sharpness of the 24-70 at 50 isn't really that much. I think it is a little overblown.
