Like him or not, his review of the 85/1.2L and 6D has many shots taken in low light with that combo, and they are all in focus, with the subject NOT dead center. Further down in the comments he states clearly that he used focus-recompose with this camera-lens combo and had no issues.

When I rented the 85/1.2L and used it on my 6D I had the exact same experience. Focus-recompose and no problems, even wide-open.

Focus-recompose is also how I shoot. I don't even have the outer points active on my 6D and have never used them. I didn't use them on any of my previous cameras either, including a Sony A850 with a Minolta 85/1.4, and again I had no issues wide-open using focus-recompose, and the A850 is nowhere near the 6D in AF performance.

Besides, I did not see any good photos on his website except his lovely wife and son... Oh, and a dog (almost forgot). I've never made my decision of purchasing camera based on Steve Huff's review.
IMO Canon 6D and 24-105 is a perfect match . I would not spend $2K on Canon 85 1.2 for using it with entry-level DSLR anyway.

The various Rebel models are entry-level DSLRs. The 6D is definitely not a sports camera, but it is full-frame, with the best low-light AF and near top high-ISO performance in the Canon lineup. It is aimed at travel photographers, for which it is Canon's best body. It makes a nice lightweight or low cost option for studio/portrait use as well.

The 85/1.2 is a great match for the 6D. Glass should be more expensive than body as it lasts far longer.

Wow! That's almost $5 off what my local bricks-and-mortar store is selling this kit for!

Decision decision decision, to buy or not to buy!

How will Canon 6D do with 70-200mm F/2.8 IS Ver II, just curious?

Thanks

It's also under $2000 at BestBuy today as their deal of the day! In stock in locations around me so it may be for you too.

Can't speak for the VII but combined with the VI the 6D does very well. It is a great camera and will
practically focus in the dark.

Lets face it the 6D was a real mixed bag. Decent sensor and low light performance but dumbed down in annoying ways so as to not compete with the 5D III. Even the 60D and rebels have more cross points. Then they even removed the popup flash so that amatuers could feel more professional by losing another useful feature.

Which store up here is selling it for that? I have been considering picking one up.

My experience has been every time there is a sharp price drop a new model is coming out. But at 2K for the kit I think it will be worth getting a older model. the new model will be a thousand more. Any rumors on a new 6D or 5D?

My local Best Buy has 2 and will do it for 1998.00 shown on the online store. But there is no stock in the warehouse. The current Canon deal to the local camera stores is a 100 off and expires on the 15th. I bet everyone has the 2000 dollar deal next week. Big box stores just got a head start at clearing inventory. Just an opinion. Ponder what to do tonight. Rich

Yeah.... one cross-type AF point. Very innovative Try to focus & recompose with 50 1.2 lens with 6D because this is the only option you have with single cross-type focus point. I want to see how "sharp" the image comes out.

Poor focusing system? What other DSLR is rated to focus at EV -3? Thats right, there are none.

In 15+ years of (hobby) photography I don't recall once using anything but center point AF. I suspect there are many other folks like myself who don't give a rat's ass about how the other points perform.

have you ever tried "focus & recompose" with the lenses faster than F1.8 ? If the results satisfy you then you definitely do not need any better focusing system.
But it's totally unacceptable to my taste.

My guess is that if you're "focusing and recomposing", you're not doing it with a moving subject. In which case, the 6D's outer focus points will work perfectly fine. For anything where you have to follow/track the subject, chances are 99% of us are using the center point... and the 6D's AF is more than capable for that.

The 6d is a great camera, I've had it for a year. I essentially was able to trade my 5d mark ii in for it.

It is dumbed down, missing features like remotely triggering flashes, 1/4000 shutter speed, no synch port, and the autofocus. It also adds gimmicks like wifi that sound great, but implementation was terrible. GPS which kills your battery.

But for me, Image quality is a beast on this thing, High iso is super clean. And the centre point focus is Amazing. I have a 1d Mark iii for birding, and I end up reaching for this camera more often. It's ultimately better than the 5d mark ii, and at less than half the price of the mark iii, I have no reason to upgrade.

I consider the 6D one of the best bargains of the Canon lineup. Only way I can see replacing it is if I decide to go full-frame for sports shooting (i.e. pass on the eventual release of a 7DII and pick up a 5D3 to do everything as opposed to my current 6D/7D combo).

Yes I have. Rented the 85/1.2 and had terrific results with my 6D. Regularly use the 85/1.8 (narrower DOF than 50/1.4). I could see focus and recompose being a problem for macro or sports, but works great with the 85/1.2L for portraits.

It looks like $2K is the new standard price for this kit.

Wonder when it will drop a little more? Or maybe I'll finally bite the bullet and go with a refurb 6D body only (with 10% CLP) since I would sell the kit lens anyway.

Edited: Called Canon and the CLP discount is only 10% for this camera. Crap...

I got my 6D kit with the 24-105 f4L IS for C$1999 at Future Shop in Calgary last weekend - that works out to about US$1779.

Adorama is also running the $1999 combo deal, but they are also including a 16GB Sandisk Extreme 45mb SD card, generic brand battery and a lousy soft case. The case is useless, but the card and battery are nice freebies. Good user reviews on the battery.

I got the same deal before Christmas through B&H. The Canon-branded soft bag wouldn't be so bad if it didn't have a big thief-summoning Canon logo on it. I use it at home, but almost always go for a smaller bag when leaving the house.

The 6D and 24-105L are a fantastic combo and a great value at this price.
