It's not actually necessary to break the sound barrier to do it, it really depends upon temperature, humidity, etc. You're correct in that it's the water in the air condensing.
Even though the entire aircraft is not going supersonic parts of the air flow on the surface is supersonic and this is what causes the halo. i have see pictures of a B-2 with the same halo and that plane is not capable of supersonic flight

Excellent image... what was your position relative to the jet? On the ground, in a bldg. etc...
I live on the 7th floor and I was on the balcony. I was at the show Saturday and thought I would stay home this time around. I put the Canon 10D into continuos mode and seen the jet starting to desend, and then fired the shots and seen the effect out of my left eye, but I was hoping that I got the image ans sure enough it was there.

I've seen this on several different web sites last day or so. It is a totally cool and awesome shot. Maybe sell this to the Navy.
Hello Gary,
Wow the emails on this image have been none stop in the last day since I posted this image. I wished I could sell this image, but I do this for a hobby and don't have a clue on how to go about this sort of thing, in fact not knowing the price range that this image would fall into.
It's an eye opener now with all the credit that users have given for this amazing shot.

Dennis if you are really interested in trying to move this image. First thing is to register it. There has been a lot of discussion on this forum about how to properly do that. If I were in your shoes I would be talking with Kurt Jones, he is on this site and has some very definate experiences and advise regarding how to handle this, and he has specific experiences with handeling one phenominal image.
I think your image is awesome and could easily see it used for posters, cards, etc. But I guess I don't really know how unique it is as I am not a real aviation buff.
Well it seems that I need to do some thing with this one, as the emails have been none stop about it. I live in Canada so I will have to contact Kurt Jones and see what he says and maybe guide me in the right direction.
It would be a nice one to be sold that is for sure, and it would help pay for some gear as well. Thanks for the tip and your comments about this F-18 shot.
Thanks for the information about copyright info. I will; have to see where this will lead me as I see the form is for the USA and I live in Canada so I will have to check into this.

Wow very cool shoot, can you do a thumbsized sequence of all 5 shots?
Thanks for your comment.
I thought I had 5 shots and in fact there are only 3 shots that so the effect and here is a quick phase shot. Not the best, but enough to show you how this all started.
