p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Broken Distance Window Fix?

Our distance window is cracked & we ordered the new window & tape thinking this would be a piece of cake since it's just held by tape. We can't get the cracked window off. Anyone done this before & know how to do it?

Option 1: Use a hair dryer to warm (not scald) the window, then slip a very thin screwdriver or Xacto knive carefully under one edge and lift off.

Option 2: disassemble the lens barrel and push the window out from inside with a finger.

Option 1 has the risk if you aren't careful of tearing the distance scale, which is a very thin piece of plastic, but otherwise is pretty risk free. Option 2 actually is quicker for many lenses if you have experience disassembling, but I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't done it before.

Thanks! We managed to pry it off from the crack as soon as I asked! But the Xacto knife would have been a much better idea! Definitely will try that next time!!

We actually keep an Xacto blade that we've dulled the edge on a bit just for prying up various plastic windows.
