If reach is your overriding concern then you are better off waiting a few months to see if Canon releases a 7D2. It is rumored to have the pixel density you are prioritizing plus the FPS and the AF that you need for BIF. Since you are concerned with weight and size (400 DO) that body is a better fit then a 1D.

Of course, that's assuming they ever release it.

+1

I sold a 7D and 1DIII, plus some Alt lenses to pay for my 1DIV , in 2011. It was well worth it.

I have a 5DIII and the 7D and 1DIII, constantly torn between which to use. for all round the 5DIII wins but I love the files from the 1DIII, hate the buffer, hate the LCD and wish it had more megapixels, 7D well its a love hate relationship. I was planning to get 1DIV but lately I'm finding taking out my 1DIII with the 100-400 for birding is causing shoulder problems. if I was you Id hang on to the full frame and wait for the 7DII and see what it has to offer

I'll add my support for the MKIV. I jumped from a 7D to a MKIII and fell in love with the ergonomics of the 1D body. I don't print much but cropping in post was limited with files from the MKIII. It's an substantial jump from 10 to 16 mp and files from the IV allow for cropping more readily. Keep the 5D though!

1d4 is well worth upgrade from 1d3. I also bought 5d3 but ergo and performance wasn't up to pay compared to 1d4 except high is and more mp. If you are coming from 1d series, 1d4 make too much sense.

One thing you will gain with the 1DIV over the 5DIII and 70D/7D/rumored 7DII bodies is pro level control of your 400 DO lens.

I don't know if there is a "scientific" test, but reports of faster lens AF happen in comparison between the same lens on a 1 series and lesser bodies.

That is the one thing not mentioned yet.

As far as keeping the other bodies goes...

If you like the 5D, it probably won't bring much.

There is a possibility that the 70D has better "low light" AF performance over the 1DIV. No idea on ISO comparisons.

If you have to sell the existing bodies to raise the funds, then it is a non-issue.

A 1DX and the 1DIV share the same battery and memory cards...

Thanks a TON everyone! I have to admit that the DO lens and the 70D work, but the AF is nowhere near as fast and accurate as the 1D3.

I'm not overly concerned with the weight anymore since getting the DO. I'm used to the 500/4, so anything is lightweight now. A body won't upset me if it's heavier.

I think I'll go find myself a 1DIV and see if I think it's worth it. I just want 1 camera, and a few lenses that's my goal. I want 1D ergonomics, I had a 5D3 with a grip and didn't like it at all.

Yes, a 1 series is way different from anything else with a grip.

The possible single exception is the EOS 1V.

I am fortunate enough to have several 1DIVs as well as both a 400 DO and a 500v1. I came from 1D Mk IIIs and the IV is w-a-y better than the III was. The 1DIV with the DO (with and without TCs) is a wonderful lightweight combination.
That's not say that I wouldn't seriously look at a 7D2 when it eventually appears but I'm very happy for now.

Keep an eye out on eBay. Henry's has sold several at under $3,000 and they have a 90-day warranty.

From Facebook

Canon EOS-1D MK IV - $2,500 w/Xtras
From George D. Lepp

Camera in excellent condition with Really Right Stuff “L” Bracket and total of three batteries. Camera does 10 frames per second and has 16.1 MP and large LCD. Has a 1.3X crop factor. Have box and all manuals. I’m moving up to a different camera. Please e-mail me instead of calling as I’m on the road. First e-mail gets priority. This price with accessories is way below e-Bay. New they went for around $5,000 and used without the accessories for around $3,000 on e-Bay.

GigaPan Epic for point and shoot cameras. In perfect shape. Makes really great panoramas with small cameras. The final result can not be told from pro cameras.

$100 – First e-mail

Anybody gonna mention you retain f/8 AF with the 1-series?

I just sold my 5D2 only because 3 cameras (1D4, 5D2, 6D) with different control placement and function is too much. I was very comfortable with the 5D2 after 3 years, didn't have to think about how to do anything. The 6D is quite different, and I know how to do what I want, but I have to stop and think for a second....and of course, the 1D4 is it's own beast.

Better to get a second 6D or 1DX if I need a third camera.

I am pretty sure everyone here knows that.

The OP did not ask what you need for a third camera.

Simplifying feels good. I sold 5D, 1d2n, xt, and t4i last fall and now only have a 6D. Great camera. Really enjoying the simplicity of just grabbing what I got and going with it. Though I may pick up a 70D at some point for more reach and better video. I don't miss the 1d form, but I'm an amateur amateur. I prefer lightweight.

Had a lot of frustration with the MKIII, none on the IV. Moved up from the 5D to 5DII, stayed with both bodies. 5DIII is nice but can't justify the current price over the value I get from the II. The Sony A7R is looking interesting for the 5DII replacement.

Sell everything.

Buy Nikon. Get a D7100 and a 200-400mm Nikon + a standard zoom. You will get a good boost in image quality right away.
