p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Canon 1D Mark 4

Hi everyone,

In my constant thirst to upgrade and get better at photography, I`ve managed to get a 1D3 for a really really low price. I`ve gone back to do some BIF photography, and I really like it for that. There are two things that I really dislike though.

1. The LCD
2. 10MP.

I can get past the crappy LCD, but not really the 10MP. I shoot mostly small birds, and my main lens now is the 400 DO + 1.4x III or 2.0x III. I love the DO, light, long, and really great IQ in my eyes. I came from the 500 f4 IS V1, and I have to say that I really like the DO in the short week that Ive had it. Lovely.

I currently have a `weird` camera system. The 1D3, the 70D, and 5Dc. I could sell those three bodies and my Sigma 18-35 and a Tokina 11-16 and have enough to buy what I think would be enough cash to get me into a 1D4 and a few lenses. I hate having 3 different batteries, 3 different charger, and 2 different types of memory cards. I would really like to streamline everything.

I use the 5D for portraits (baby), the 70D for far far away stuff, and 1D for anything that moves. I like the 70D, but the AF still isn`t as good as the 1D3 in my eyes and doesn`t AF at F8 either.

So my plan would be the following (I already have the primes):

1D4 (Yes, only 1 body, I don't do anything critical or get paid for this)
24-70 V1 (to replace the 18-35)
40 2.8
50 1.4
85 1.8
400DO
1.4 and 2.0 TC's

I don`t have much $$ to get anything else right now, but a 70-200 would probably on the list after I get a 1D4.

Toughts??Opinions??

Thanks!

Can't help with the "how to justify the cost" part but my 1D4 does fit my needs better than any other Canon body & I really wish I could justify having a second one. Like you it's a hobby.

I too would keep the 5D, it isn't worth an awful lot and I would have the 50mm on that as a walk around for when you don't want to carry the much bigger 1D4. You can also put a 24-70 on it for if anything comes up to shoot while your long lens is on the 1D4. It would really come down to whether you ever use 2 bodies at once though.

Sell them all and get the 5D3. I have the 1D4 and 5D3, but I bought the 1D4 3 months before the 5D3 was announced. If I had known the 5D3 was coming with 1DX AF I would not have bothered and just kept my 1D3 for another 3-6 months, as much as I love the 1D4. I'd sure miss the 10fps and huge battery life, but 5D3 has better overall IQ and even when FL limited you are only down 10% in reach, which is not that big a deal.

1D4 won't disappoint, but other than reach and LCD, I don't find it much better than the 1D3. For reach critical situations the 70D will put nearly 40% more pixels on your bird than the 1D4, which is basically a 1.4x TC worth, but without the loss of a stop of light.

I'll come in with the stupid question- Why not settle on a single 5D III?

It's no 1D, but it's pretty damn close, missing only the frame-rate really. Keep the 70D for the far-away stuff and the stuff it does best.

Edit: PP beat me to it.

Thanks a lot guys. At least I'm not completely out in left field. I may just keep the 5D and use some tax return $$

Pixel, I've had the 5D3, I just didn't like it except for super high ISO. The 1D form factor is where it's at for me! Reach is my main concern, hence the 1D4 over the 1D3. Ive done some tests with the 400DO and 2.0X III, I have to say I'm impressed compared to the 2XII.

Having moved up from the 1DMKIIn, 1DMKIII to the 1DMKIV.....my opinion is that the MKIV is worth its weight over the MKIII. It did take a bit of time to "re learn" how to use it...as the metering system is MUCH better, AF better, and overall...slight improvement on battery life.
I could push the MKIII more and then bring back to the level I needed on exposure compared to the MKIV...but once I found the range I could push...no issues. The extra range on ISO was well worth it as well.
I also have the 5DMKIII...and only got it for the ISO range..since it will be a while before I can afford the 1Dx. I do find it "almost" able to me for my moving object needs, but I still pull out the MKIV first every time...unless in very dark times.

Back to the quest for a "new" setup.....to me getting the 40, 50, 85 up front..don't make sense, unless you do ALOT of shallow DOF imagery. I would suggest looking for a 70-200 2.8..any version and you'd be really capable overall.
If you could find a way to keep the 1DMKIII...and just pick up the 24-70 and 70-200....you'd be amazed what you could cover between those to bodies.
Then in time...add on smaller lens range.

The two most used lenses in my bag are the 24-70 and 70-200 both 2.8. I get great portraits with the 24-70....and even the 70-200 too.

To each their own as far as "how" they have to see through the view finder (wide angle or not),
but I never found myself needing full frame body...and the only reason I have one now is strictly based on ISO performance.

I prefer the form factor of 1 series too, but you could've bought a grip for the 5D3 and doubled battery life.

That's a lot of gear to shift around to gain 6 megapixels. If you need more reach, a lens is a better purchase than a camera.

Yes but a 400 DO weighs 1.9kg and 500 f/4 mk I weighs 3.88kg. One you could handhold for very long periods, the other maybe 5 minutes at a time. Even if you went for the mk II it's still 3.2kg and 2x the price.

There definitely is a lot to be said for simplifying systems, which is one of the reasons I love the consistency of new products developed within the 1-series line..

If you aren't in love with the 5d3 prosumer form factor, I think the moves you described would make a ton of sense - on paper the 1d4 might seem like an incremental upgrade over the 1d3, but I found in practice that it was a big, big upgrade over the 1d3.

Also, keeping the 5d for a light FF option is a great call for the resale value of the body now..

I don't use LCD's much to look at shots, when I do it's usually to check the RGB channels, so the crappy LCD is not a deal breaker for me. I have a 1Ds Mark II I could complain about more readily when it comes to the LCD screen.

I didn't think the 10 megapixel resolution would be a problem, but after I got my Mk III - I was sorely disappointed that I couldn't crop much without it showing up in large prints.

But I have one and use it frequently. It's a very nice reliable, rugged, and weather resistant camera.
