I can't wait to see some good testing and reviews of this lens.

So it is true that the price is ~$1300? Or has that leaked rumor not been confirmed yet? Much more expensive than most random predictions and even some thought my $999 prediction was too high.

I just got back from wppi, held the lens in my hand, it looks just like the 35mm but a bit slimmer, I didnt ask about the price, but I really doubt it will cost over 1k, more like 7-8 hundred.

That rumored price is by a single store in Australia, and not guaranteed. I have not seen any other semi-authoritative prices. My data-free guesstimate is the $500-800 range. Sigma has done an excellent job of PR by positioning it vs the Otus, not the Canikon alternatives.

The lack of information from Sigma has increased the rumor mill and hype. Apparent demand is tremendous. It will be very interesting to see if the lens meets the hype.

I'd rather pay $1300 and it be really good than $900 and it be "compromised"..

(as I'm kind of feeling the AF of the 35 is at the moment)

Thanks krementz. I guess there's hope for a cheaper price ...We'll have to wait and see.

If it lives up to the hype (I'm sure it will optically, but AF not sure) and prices <$1000 I will probably get this over the 50L. On the other hand if it's higher in price than I will probably just get a used or refurb 50L. When I got my 35L (before Sigma 35 existed) from Canon refurb + 20% off I had both the 35L and 50L in my basket. Sometimes I wish I chose the 50L as 35L prices have come down quite a bit since then I would have had the option of the Sigma 35.

Some complaints about the Sigma 35mm AF, I have no idea why, I used the Canon 35L and cant tell what lens af is faster between the 2.

I've done a mass of tests. My sigma 35 was horrendously back focusing at distance which is a big issue. It should be setup correctly out of the box.

With regards to accuracy, the sigma was more accurate but I've yet to test it "in the field".

So there are sigma AF issues. If you're not seeing them, good on you, but they are there.

A retailer in Brussels told me he was not supposed to indicate when the 50 mm art would be available. He just said the arrival was "imminent". I wonder if two months can be understood as imminent ?

Official Sigma dealer in Belarus says the new Art 50/1.4 will be only $790. Wow, if true. And if the hype is true, too.

Isn't the Canon 50/1.4 around $300-400? I wonder how will they compare.

So what does that mean, about twice as much in the US?

$790 would be a sweet price if true in the U.S. 50L used prices may come down quite a bit if this lens lives up to the hype and more.

It's going to have to cost more than the 35, if it's all they say it is. More glass, and hopefully much better AF.

So, $1100-1200 US street price seems about in line and probable, possibly as little as a grand (one can hope). MSRP of course would be $1500-1600. And in typical Sigma fashion, the price will slowly ratchet down as the weeks go by. Not that I'm waiting for a lower price!

I don't think so- a well-corrected 35mm lens is more complex than a well-corrected 50mm lens; same if they're not so well corrected, a la 50/1.8 vs. 35/2. It would make sense for the 50/1.4|A to debut at a lower price than the 35/1.4|A did.

You're probably right now that I see the diagram of the 50 next to the 35.

3 SLD elements and 1 aspherical lens for 13 elements in 3 groups vs 4 SLD, 1 FLD and 2 aspherical for the same amount of elements. I'm a little disappointed about the lack of FLD glass - maybe surprised actually. But, I don't design 'em, I just use 'em. And if I get something the kills a Zeiss for $800 instead of $1100, so much the better!
