p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon D800E with Nikon 16-35.. Your thoughts.

Hello all,
I'm thinking about buying a wide angle lens and was wanting to hear any feed back you all have..
So I own the 14-24 and the 24 f1.4 that I use for landscapes.
But I was looking for another wide angle lens that's wider then 24mm that I could use screw on filters.
These are the lenses I was looking at..

Zeiss 15mm f2.8- not sure if wanting to purchase because the lack of weather sealing.
Nikon 16-35 f4 - not sure if I want to purchase because so many mixed reviews when used with d800/E.

If any users have used these combos and could give me a little feed back,it would be appreciated.. And if you have other lenses to suggest would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jonathan Tucker.

I still use a 17-35/2.8 purely for the ability to use screw on filters and have f/2.8.

I've never used the 16-35mm, but I've heard good things about it, especially stopped down a bit.

The 16-35 is a fine lens, its light weight, sharp and takes screw on filters just fine.

I agree with Sunny and Kell. I use the 16-35mm with my D800 cameras, and think the lens is very good - sharpness is very good, and the VR is very handy despite what some folks might think. I have the 14-24mm as well, FYI.

At one time I had both 14-24 and 16-35. On D3s, 14-24 was clear winner but with D800e, not much difference other than focal length and distortion. 14-24 was still bit sharper on tripod however I don't shoot all my shots with tripod. Having VR and ability to use filters produced way more keepers for me. I am still very happy with 16-35 on D800e and have no regrets of not having 14-24.

Have loads of shots using the D800 + 16-35. Here's a variety of shots.

f/8, 13sec, 100iso, 24mm, tripod mounted w/ 10-stop filter

f/4, 1/80sec, 3600iso, 31mm, VR on, handheld

---

And just to show the VR capabilities, here is using a D7100 from last night:

f/4, 1/15sec, 2200iso, 16mm, VR on, handheld

In that case I'd go for the Zeiss 21mm. However different people favour one or the other vs. your 14-24 so I don't think there is much gain there (same goes for the Zeiss 15mm) with the exception of being able to use filters. That said I absolutely adore my 21mm on the D800E.

However if I was you I'd just go for the best non-screw in filter system available for the 14-24mm. Didn't I hear recently there was another, excellent, system just released ?

Yeah if I was starting from the beginning I'd probably opt for the 21mm Zeiss, despite the terrible live view on the D800/E. The 16-35 offers a lot of flexibility though, which is difficult to ignore especially when stopped down.

Nice pics m.sommers

Have the 16-35, Zeiss 21.

Love them both equally. Different tools for different tasks.

The 16-35 f/4 is overall a good lens for landscape photography since it has a front thread and can take filters.
I liked to shoot this lens a lot for that reason. Center performance in terms of sharpness is really great on the D800E however the corner performance is really poor.
You need to stop down the lens at least to f/11 to get acceptable sharpness in the corners. And at f/11 diffraction already starts and you'll lose center sharpness.

The lens has a serious problem when you shoot long exposures on high ISO. Magenta/red flare will show up in your image. Put the camera in a dark room without any light, leave the lens cap on, set the camera to ISO 6400 and expose for 5 Minutes. You'll get a magenta/red image.

Currently i am moving in the other direction. I have a 14-24 that i've been using only at night when i needed f/2.8. The 14-24 performs way better in corner sharpness. It doesn't have the issue that i described for the 16-35. I bought the Lee SW 150 Filter holder and with the new Haida Glass ND filters up to ND 3.0 i can shoot even long exposures with that lens. Polarizer is available in 6x6" from Canvision.
Now i can do everything with that lens in terms of filters. I just have to accept the bigger size and weight of the filters. Since i will take the 16-35 out of my bag i am still fine in terms of total weight.
And the results you get from the 14-24 are worth it.

Best regards
Achim

16-35 and a D800 seems like a match made in heaven for landscapes. I've heard great things about both and am sure you wouldn't be disappointed.

I might add that there a bunch of 16-35s on the B+S board and the pricies are very attractive. Most are under 800.00 and if I recall one was around 750.Anything under 900 is a really good price. I have the D800 and it is my
go to lens for landscapes. I'm very pleased with the lens.

I agree...this is a wonderful lens and takes 77mm filters like my other Nikon lenses.
