Hi Boris,

First of all I want to say that you have a spectacular gallery on your website, congratulations!
You really capture the beauty in every place you go.
It is nice to see some photo of the Faroe Island, a place I want to visit soon.

I see that you plan your trip a professionnal way, taking for exemple your dry suit and underwater housing for your DSLR for Silfra. It must take a lot of room in your luggages! :-)
I don't have this equipment but I'm sure it's possible to rent it in Reykjavik.

I was also interesting in your Ice Cave trip, another thing I want to do. I know Einar, the guide that you hired for this, his wife drove me to Ingólfshöfði, a wonderful place for bird photography. I will plan an ice cave tour with them next winter.

To finish this post, I'm glad that you purchased my map of Iceland 1st generation (I didn't know that) and found it helpful. Thank you for this feedback.
It is true that we found the paper a bit fragile under strong wind and rainy days (what you can find in Iceland), so I managed to use a very strong paper for the second edition, untearable and waterproof.
It was very challenging for my printer to use this thick paper (specially to fold it) but we achieve to make it and everybody seems to be happy with it :-)

They say wear waterproof pants or ski pants.... isnt this awkward if you are going to a restaurant there? or a bar?

If you just want to explore Reykjavik jeans are fine. Outside of Reyjavik I would recommend some Goretex/ski trousers with a thin insulation. I wouldn't go to one of the Reykjavik clubs with ski trousers but everywhere else in Iceland you won't feel misplaced.

The winter weather in Reykjavik is milder than many US cities (NYC, Chicago) so yeah, don't worry about it, jeans are fine. With a good coat of course.

Bushwacker, at the expense of disagreeing with some of my learned colleagues, you can get by with jeans only (a) if it is strictly an urban visit to Reykjavik, and (b) if weather cooperates. I would never go to Iceland with jeans alone.

I agree with philber. Jeans will only work inside Reykjavik. Outside they aren't practical because..:
-The material in jeans makes them very cold against the skin. If you do wear them anyway you need some warm underpants.
-Snow tend to stick to them, then it melts and makes them wet, cold and uncomfortable.

Don't know if it's the same in Iceland, but over here if it's really cold and you have to walk for a bit it's common to wear ski type of pants on top of jeans and take them off before entering the restaurant. I have pants with zippers that allow me to remove them without taking off the shoes. However, normally I just wear jeans and try and find a parking spot near the restaurant.

Trondheim's climate looks a lot like Reykjavik's, other than the difference in precip.

I live somewhere with hotter summers and colder winters, on average. IMHO, the most important thing is to layer.

I'd wear something nylon or polyester that have enough room for a pair of long underwear. I wear lightweight (150~180 g/m^2) merino wool long underwear all winter long, basically November through March. It's a lot easier to shed top layers than bottom layers. I don't even own a pair of jeans, so I'm probably not the best one to chime in - I wear lightweight softshell pants year round. They look like that look like khaki work pants rather than technical pants, so I wear them for both work and play. Makes it easy to hike for a few miles over lunch break! Compared to cotton jeans, they dry faster, they're cooler in the summer, block wind better in the winter, they hold onto less dirt, and snow just falls off of them.

Most of the time I spend outside in the winter is hiking or snowshoeing, so cotton jeans and insulation are both a bad idea. When you overheat, you'll start sweating, which can make you uncomfortable and can put you at greater risk of frostbite or feeling cold.

I do have a pair of insulated pants (Patagonia Micropuff), but the only time I really use them is when I'm out in the winter shooting aurora or stars and not moving too much.

Regarding access to the ice caves, my opinion is this. Unless you really know what you are doing, and I mean really, don't even think of doing it without a guide. Not only is the road leading there strictly for specialised vehicles, but conditions change really quickly, and I wouldn't like to be in a cave, dealing with an underwater river swell. But with a guide, it is, as Boris says, fairly easy. And the fewer the people, the better. There was a nice guy who stood for many minutes right where Boris wanted to take a shot, with no

2nd shot of this set is in my opinion the best of the entire thread that you gents have posted. It is frightening! I am envisioning the spine of some kind of alien encased in the ice. Stunning shot!

There are no real cities ouside of Reykjavik in Iceland. It's easy: On the days you explore Reykjavik wear some jeans and on the two days outside of the city wear some ski pants.

I agree with what Bobu said. If I were going there in winter I would probably bring:

-Ski pants to wear if it is really cold. Yes, mine has zippers on the sides like you describe.

-Some kind of thinner waterproof pants, combined with long underpants. If you have warm underpants you may not need ski pants.

-One pair of slightly nicer pants (jeans maybe) to use in town.

-Two pair of long underwear:
Thin ones in cotton to use for example under the jeans if it's too cold without.
Thicker ones in wool.
