We usually see photos of birds catching fish so hear is the sad truth that they don’t always succeed. This snowy egret was fishing in the Gulf of Mexico at St. Andrews State Park in Florida about two weeks ago.

While it did not catch this one, it caught many others.

I’ve noticed that it is brighter in Florida that New York. In new you’re my normal exposure for a white bird is: ISO 400, 1/1600, f8. In Florida I always have to go to 1/2000 to preserve detail in the whites. I wonder if it is the angle the sun is going through the atmosphere or if it is pollution?

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Nice shots Morris...it may have gotten away from the heron but you nabbed the shots perfectly. Good observation on the different settings needed to achieve similar results.

Excellent job on these Morris, you adjusted to the different light quite well. I would say the difference in light is mainly due to latitude, that also effects how the shadows fall quite a bit and how early the light gets too hot.

i think the light is lovely in all of these shots - in particular, i like the first & second images more than the third.. but the striking subject in front of a subtle blue water makes it work very well for me.

Very well exposed images Morris with a nice contrast between the white of the bird and the blue of the water. The faster shutter speed mus help for sharper images too.
I notice a big difference when I go to Ottawa in the winter but maybe some of that is due to reflected light off all the snow!

Lovely set Morris ! First and last are my favorites. I , too, think the light difference is due to the latitude .

Wonderful photos, Morris! The clarity and color saturation are right-on. You handled the Egret's whites perfectly.

A great job on these Morris. I think the difference in light is that you are close to the sun in FL ~ Ron

Thank you Eric,

I took one photo, looked at my LCD, saw the flashing highlight warning and remembered making this adjustment in the past.

Thank you Martin,

I'm pretty shore it's the latitude and the angle of the sun entering the atmosphere. More atmosphere means more light absorbstion
