Once the sun goes down I usually shoot manual exposure in the neighborhood of f2.8, iso 6400 and ss 1/200 for ambient. Same thing for flash except I'll up the ss to around 1/400 to get a couple stops below ambient and dial the flash in to taste. I use auto white balance for flash and ambient. Light cycling is, surprisingly, not a problem shooting ambient and not an issue with a flash because the flash overpowers the ambient.
In the day time I shoot aperture priority a lot to allow for shadows and or changing light conditions from one end of the track to the other.

Thanks. That shot has gotten a lot of attention for me. I have picked up a couple new contacts and a pretty decent gig off of it. Funny thing is it wasn't a difficult shot. Just happened to be there.
