ISO 100-400 - 1DsMkIII still as good as newer bodies?

Am looking at shooting tripod mounted, lower ISO settings, optimum apertures,

ISO 100-400 for most shooting.

Have an opportunity to get a very nice 1Ds MkIII at a low price.

Considering the advances lately how do the images compare to newer bodies? High ISO
settings are not a consideration, just the base and close to it. Natural scenes, architectural,
old buildings and such with some macro flowers and close work.

I have a 5D3 and a 1Ds3. I think they are comparable at the lower ISOs.

The only real complaint about the 1DsIII is the LCD screen. The menu's are a little dated but thats okay as its still quite usable. I own a 1DIII personally and the LCD screen isn't very good for determining sharpness at times.

That said, the AF is top notch. I've never heard any complaints about the 1DsIII regarding ISO below 400. (most people say the DR and colors of a 1DsIII is better than a 5D at lower ISOs).

I didn't see much difference in DR between my 1Ds III and 1DX and low ISO's. If you're shooting from a tripod at low ISO's, no reason not to go with a 1Ds III. It's a great camera.

What do you consider a low price for a 1DsIII?

Style-wise, sounds similar to what I am mostly shooting (also between 100-400 ISO mostly). I have no personal experience with the 1Ds MKIII, but sensor-wise this camera is similar to my 5D MkII body. I remember from reviews of the 1Ds MkIII that there was no difference at low ISO numbers between this camera and the 5D MkII. Even the 5D MkIII (which I tested) was the same in regard to IQ at ISO 100-400 compared to the 5D MkII. I don't think that you need one of the latest Canon DSLR bodies for this kind of photography - especially if you do a lot of manual focus anyway.

As far as outright image quality at lower iso I prefer it over my 5dIII. I can't put my finger on why I just do. The newer bodies have advantages but I don't think lower iso IQ is one of them.

For low ISO use I would not sell my 1DsIII because there is nothing in the Canon line I consider better.

I use DSLR controller App via live view on my Samsung S3 Note.

When I was pricing them deciding between a 1DsIII and 1D III, the lowest I saw for a high mileage body was 1850. The average sell price seems to be around 2100, with some like news selling around 2300.

I asked about the price because I'm selling my low mileage 1Ds3 for $2,100 on the B&S. It's been for sale for several weeks. There's been interest, but no takers. I'm on the fence whether I want to sell it or not. Originally I wanted to sell both my 1Ds3 and 1D4 (very low mileage) and buy a 1Dx. I've reconsidered that because both the 1Ds3 and 1D4 are such good cameras, but more specialized than the 1Dx.

I've always liked photos from the 1Ds3. I'm surprised how much you can manipulate them in LR before the IQ starts to suffer. I doubt the 1Dx files would look much better than the 1Ds3 at low ISOs (below 1600).

I had a 1DsIII before I bought the 1Dx, and I have to tell you the photos I got out of the 1DsIII were absolutely some of the finest I have ever taken. The autofocus and sharpness of the photos was top notch to me.

couple of negatives, some of which have been stated....but I will state again.....

1. the photo review screen is low resolution as compared to the 1Dx, after using the 1Dx, I was amazed at the difference

2. ISO is pretty much limited on the 1DsIII, if I recall 800 was pretty much the limit of what I would use. Sometimes I like to shoot in low light and really need more ISO, but the camera topped out at 1600 if I remember correctly. The 1Dx is just getting warmed up at 1600.

If I hadnt bought the 1Dx, I would still be using the 1DsIII.....

Ditto: Great low ISO IQ, but (small quibbles) limited in handling by poor LCD/LV and lack of integrated WiFi.

The 1Ds3 is still my best camera body, with consistently (very slightly) better images than 5D2 (shot simultaneously).

1DX photos at low and moderate ISO don't look better than those from the 1DsIII, but you can get a lot more of them.

Agreed. Also, AF on the 1DsIII blows the 5DII out of the water for action photography and off-centre AF points. Especially the one you have.

The 1DsIII normal range of ISO 100 to 3200 can be 'expanded' to 50 to 6400. I was generally OK with 1600 on the 1DsIII and 1DIII, as long as it didn't need much exposure modification in PP.

I'm still appreciating the 1Ds3 body I bought from you! Thanks again.

Yes, when you add in the features you mention, and others, the 1Ds3 is far advanced in functions and durability over the 5D2 (even the 5D3 in many cases). These newer 5D models and the 1DX are more advanced in many electronic ways, particularly related to video/LV and ISO. Even the 6D has impressive features and IQ that push well beyond the 1Ds3.

But for a sheer imaging machine, it's hard to beat that 1Ds3!

Have been shooting with the 1DsMkIII for a bit now. Very nice images. Was very good for Basketball games, especially with the 85 f/1.8 and the 400 f/2.8 lenses used from courtside and end areas.

Since I shot sports for news years ago with motor drives of 3-5 frames per second it was not a problem. Have the 1D MkIII for the other body and they complement each other well.

Most of the time is tripod mounted outdoor work and rural agriculture & buildings. Very nice for this. Compared to a friends 6D I like the images from the DsMkIII better - as long as I am under 1600 ISO.

That said, if another body crops up in the same price range I may well end up with two 1DsMkIII bodies.

1ds iii was one of my favorite cameras. i liked it better than the 1d iv for weddings.

but i think the 5d iii beats it in almost every way...however if the price is right then who cares. for your situation it sounds like it would be a perfect camera.

The 1Ds3 is IMO slightly better at low ISO than the 5D3, but that's about the only advantage it has (other than a vertical grip, of course). I sold my Ds3 and don't really miss it -- the 5D3 is still plenty good enough at lower ISOs for my un-discerning eyes and I'm more interested in high-ISO performance, which the Ds3 sucked at.
