p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which Nikkor MF for A7r?

I've always liked the crisp and sharp images from Nikon glasses, but I don't know much about them.

Been thinking about getting some reasonably priced MF Nikkors on my A7r.

After some research, it seems like 105/2.5 Ai, 85/1.4 Ai-s are some really good ones.

Any other recommendations guys?

Also, any comparison between 105/2.5 vs 105/1.8, 28/2 vs 28/2.8?

Thanks!

I picked up a 105mm f/2.5 and it balances nicely on Sony a7.

IQ looks really nice so far with nice colors and great bokeh. My copy is sharp wide open. I've heard that the nikon 105 f/1.8 is a little soft wide open and gives a certain look to portraits that some people like.

Nikon 85 is supposed to be good as well as canon FD 85 f1.8 and 100 f2

If you haven't been here yet, it's a good place to start.

http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html#rating

I have both of the 28mm but haven't had time to test them much on the a7R, but so far they are very close in IQ.

My 50mm lenses (f/1.4 and f/2) are performing excellent along with both of my macro lenses.

Thank you guys! The link is very helpful.
Looks like 105/2.5 is the one everyone recommends.
Still debating which 28 and which 50 to get.

I like the following:
28 f/2.8 AIs
105 f/2.5 non-AI
200 f/4 AIs
The older 85 f/1.8 HC or K is nice.

I like my 28/2.0 on the A7. Not the greatest for corner to corner sharpness, but centrally is good wide open and stopped down gets good towards the edges. Out of focus rendering is pleasant for a fast wide-angle of this vintage.

There are two very different optical formulations of this classic lens. Early lenses are a Sonnar-type design and later lenses are a Gauss derivative, the later lens supposedly better at close range.

The 55 Micro in either 2.8 or 3.5 are very inexpensive and very good. KEH was showing a 105/2.5 AI in excellent condition for around $150. The 28/2.8 AIs is optimized for close focus and is a Nikkor classic.

One of the biggest bargains is the Nikon 50mm 1.8 AIS (the longnose version). You can find it used for $60. It compares to the outstanding (and more expensive) Contax Zeiss 50mm 1.7.

For 28mm look for 28/2 (any version) or 28/2.8 AI-S (AI is not nearly as good). The 28/2 is a great overall lens while the 28/2.8 AI-S is unmatched near MFD (8in) but isn't so good at infinity.

I agree with what's said about the longnose 50/1.8.

If you want a freakishly sharp and cheap telephoto, look for a 135/3.5. Its bokeh is nothing to write home about but it's razor sharp and very cheap (like $50 or so, definitely under $100).

I tried the 200/4 Ai and its green/purple colour fringing (CA ?) was appalling, just about the worst I've ever seen!

Yes, the 200/4 is not all that great, although they are very small and very cheap. The 180/2.8 AIs ED is miles ahead, but expensive. The 200/4 Micro IF is auto focus, but built for manual focusing, will knock your socks off, but is really expensive.

Thanks to all the great suggestions from you guys, I'm now building a Nikkor setup for my A7r: 28/2.8, 50/1.8, 105/2.5.

Has anyone used 180/2.8 ED AI-S? I've heard great things about it but how does it feel in a7r? Hand holdable?

The 180 ED AIS is a heavy but nicely handling lens, and while very sharp with a great bokeh WO, suffers from a slew of uncorrected CA. This is what it does on the Nikon D700/D3/D3x. I tended to use it for work destined for B&W conversion because of this; purple pollutes the image wherever you look until ~ƒ/8. Seemed to do much better on film. Can't comment on how it will perform on the a7.

I think it feels great. It is big (and heavy) but to me, handles nice on the a7R. As with any large lens, I hang onto the lens with it supporting the body instead of the body supporting the lens (I hope that makes since).

I don't use it much, and have thought about selling it many times over the years but have never been able to bring myself to letting it go. After using it on film and DSLR bodies, I prefer it on the a7R with its MF aids.

The ED-version only exists as an AIS; the AI was the previous version without ED glass and optically inferior.

You are correct. I bought it off my brother years ago and always assumed it was an AI, as it has 5 screws on the mount. Never noticed the AI-s notch before today.

Anyway, thanks for the correction. Fixed in post.

I like the Bokeh of the 135/3.5, which retained a Sonnar formula throughout it's entire production run- from the 1950s through to the 1980s.

Wide-open on the M9, single-coated RF version. From the 1950s.

And one of the last made, an Ais version on the Nikon Df, wide-open.

I picked up the Leica version for $60, and the F-Mount for $50. This is an inexpensive lens.
