My 100-400 IS is playing tricks on me. At 250-400mm the AF seems to be searching and inconsistent. Has anyone experienced this problem in the past?

I had this happen to a used 100-400. I sent it in t o cps, and unfortunately they couldn't fix it/wouldn't fix it.

I had to return the lens..

It probably goes without saying, but be sure the limiter switch on the lens body is in the proper position *and* that all of your in-camera settings regarding AF are fully understood and set correctly.

Focus at 400mm is hit and miss. At times it will not even allow me to use the shutter.

Taking it to Canon tomorrow and hopefully they will fix it.

thanks

Which camera body?
What are your AF settings?

Canon 7D.
AF settings - tried factory default and it still seems to be searching at 300-400mm.

Lens performed better in the day light compared to a hockey arena.

Hello

Have you tried putting the lens into manual and using the AF to confirm focus. It might be a faulty AF sensor. It sounds like a lesser version of the problems some Tamron 160-600 users are having

Canon quoted me a flat repair fee of $320 - if nothing is wrong with it they still charge $320. Is this new?

probably a new price . Someone has to label the lens w / problem , then it goes to right person .
Back when canon had a repair site here [ Union City / Hayward Calif . ] they had people for different lenses - long / wide / manual focus , AF and movie .
That was back in film days and you could walk in and talk to the people .
Now a days it's hard to even find a free estimate .
