I was shooting this morning and when I downloaded was greeted with these two beauties. Frames before & after were fine. Shooting on tripod (60D with 10-22) in live view, aperture priority, f/11, shutter speeds 2-5 seconds (using 6 stops ND) with long exp NR enabled. Are these dark frames gone wrong or what??

Memory card error/failure is my guess. Did you use a card reader?

You inadvertently opened the card door slightly and some frames got light-struck.

Yes, certainly is the card.

I actually had this happen to me a LOT back when SD cards were new. The last time it happened was using my 60D, and oddly enough, it only happened to the RAW files (looked exactly like this). The thumbnails would show correctly, but the file itself was corrupted. Didn't matter how it was read - the file was bad on the card.

Make sure that you're using a good and fast class 10 card - decent brand. Put this particular card on the "watch list".
I've used the same card I had the issues with on the 60D since then, and had no issues.

I've never once had this happen to me with a CF card.

Defective memory card, or it needs a fresh low and high level format.

Thanks for the info. Makes me think twice about the value of dual card slots. I've never had a card problem before, and figured they were one of the more reliable parts of the system. This particular card was a Sandisk 16mb SDHC1. I've always bought Sandisk and never had a problem - what are other folks' favorites?

any(every) time I've had files end up like that it's been the card reader.

I had a cheap USB card reader do that . I was downloading from a firewire and another card using USB [ not sure if USB 1 or 2 ] Put the card in firewire - everything OK - tossed the USB reader .

Now that was funny.

(Especially since back in the film days it happened to me once or twice.)

Did you download via camera cable, WiFi, or pulled the card and used a card reader?

Used the computer's onboard card reader.

The most likely suspect, as mentioned above, is the card reader, followed by the card.

If you put the card back in the camera and try to download the file via cable, and the file still looks scrambled, then that'll indicate either a card problem or, less likely, a camera problem.

If a cable download has no problems, then it's almost certainly the card reader.

Do the frames show up OK on the camera's LCD screen? If so, then it is probably a card reader problem. If the frames look the same in-camera, then probably the card is bad.

As I understand it, the images on the camera's LCD are the embedded JPEGs which can look OK, even if the Raw is corrupted, so that is not a definitive test. I refer you to BrianO's post #14 just above.

I also think it is the card. But I suggest you get a brand new high quality card and not trust that one anymore.
Don't buy cheap memory cars, ever.
