p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Dragon's Comeupance - Death by lethal injection

You may recall this image from a previous post (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1272219/0?keyword=soup#12120234):

1. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_8087White-facedMeadowhawk_zpse6eed78b.jpg
I mentioned at that time that the tables would be turned. And a few of you thought the mosquito would suck up some steroids and take on its nemesis. Although that would be really cool to see, what I really meant was this...

I was walking through an overgrown meadow in a local park last summer seeking out some dragonfly images. Quite a large number of them were flying about, munching on mozzies. As I was poking about for a willing subject, I saw a meadowhawk fly away, stop suddenly, then flail away.

2. This saffron-winged meadowhawk became inexorably tangled in the web of a female marbled orb weaver. These ancient insects are strong flyers, but their delicate wings are no match for such a large web. The dorsal side of the meadowhawk is a bit tougher than the underbelly, and the spider chose the softer side for its attack.

3. Snap! There goes a wing. You can see the prey's wings are well bent, and one has broken. The dragon was still struggling but, the web is well build for withstanding some stress. This image provodes a good view of the spider going for the belly. The fangs are well into the abdomen.

4. A closer view of the biting action.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_8040Saffron-wingedMeadowhawkampMarbledOrbweaver_zps7e97c734.jpg
5. The Scream! The spider backed off a bit to let the venom do its thing. At this point, the meadowhawk was becoming pretty much inactive. The spider was at an angle to the lens, and not on the same plane as the dragon, so overall focus is not the best. I'm guessing the mouth of the meadowhawk opened that much in reaction to the poisons in the venom.

I sure hope you enjoyed, or at least found interest in, this post. Whether you did or did not, tell my why. Just don't scuttle off without leaving a comment.

Cheers!

Great shots Ken and wonderful illustration how quickly the table can turn. One moment preadator the next prey. In your prior post, seeing the dragon eat a mosquito did not bother me . However seeing this dragon become prey pulls at me quite differently.

It's those damn spiders again! Very enjoyable and I wasn't the least bit threatened by this one. Nature, large and small is quite amazing! TFS

Good post Ken, always good to be reminded that the predator often becomes something else's prey!
