Has anyone tried this combo? I assume the lens will work in crop mode on the a7R but I wonder how good a lens this is and how it compares to the Zeiss 24-70/4 FE in terms of image quality.

Here's my reasoning. The a6000 looks like it could be a great street camera with it's touted AF speed. The 16-70 could be a good all purpose lens for that camera as well as the a7R (albeit in crop mode). It seems the 24-70/4 FE has mixed reviews but I find no comparisons to the 16-70. So I'm looking to this fine group for their opinions. I have a couple of primes for the a7R and adapters for other lenses but I'd like to get an all purpose zoom and since I've pre-ordered an a7R, might this be a good solution or will I be disappointed?

The other alternative is to cancel the a6000, and the Fuji X-T1 with kit lens.

I can provide one image:

33mm 1/30s f4 ISO 100

I have put the raw file on dropox:

I really love the lens on the NEX 7. Works very well when carried on the NEX alongside with the A7r too.
I have several albums with pictures from the lens on the NEX 7 on Flickr:

Here are some hand-held full-resolution test pics, I took on the first day with the lens:

I've put up some pics from the FE 24-70/4 ZA on the NEX 7 in the NEX Images Thread:
NEX Images Thread

The link to the album there carries some additional images from the 16-70/4 ZA as well. All pics are tacked accordingly.

I decided to pick up the lens and try it out. I have 30 days to return. I'm using it on the a7R in crop mode. I did compare it to the 24-70 in the store. The 24-70 was definitely soft in the corners . . . enough that I would have to think hard whether the convenience of a zoom was worth the $$$.

I'm going to explore using the 16-70 on the a7R in crop (APS-C) mode. Images are 4800x3200 versus full frame 7360-4912. Quite a drop off but 16MP or so might be OK. The question is whether it's worth using in crop mode and also slapping this on the a6000 when it arrives. Still not sure and still intrigued by the Fuji XT1 and it's lens set. A drab day here so it's hard to draw a lot of conclusions.

Does the A7(r) allow you enable OSS on this lens? (many e-mount lenses wont).

Noob question of the day . . . How would I know? Steady Shot is set to On but does that mean it's supported?

If the menu option lets you modify/enable OSS then it's supported. On the lenses which it isn't the option is greyed out. Sounds like it's supported then.

Most definitely is supported. I can turn Steady Shot on or off. Clearly not greyed out.

Bob, you are worrying waaay too much. I've watched you go through a few formats and lenses now, and you are great at making the most out of whatever you are shooting.

I think for you it's just a matter of picking out what you enjoy using for now, and going for it. Either way, you'll be making great images - even if you had the 24-70 and the imperfect corners.

"Sometimes perfect is not so perfect."

Cheers,

For the OP - how is the combo working out?

Looks like from the A7/r pics that the 16-70/4 might be a good lens for the A6000. It'd be great if the A6000 has the clarity that the A7/r does.
