The wretch Rorslett doesn't have a lot of praise for either version of the 500, though likes the 1000 a lot. However, because the 1000 is f/11, the image is dark and a challenge to focus with DSLR screens. He urges a good tripod supprt for the 500 v.2, the superior of the 500's, to assure best image quality.

I have the old 500mm f:8 and still use it occasionally on a D800E and a D300. It cost me a staggering $249 back in 1969 - a large sum to me then.

IQ holds up well but you must use care in focusing. Best, of course, in bright light.

And, the "donut" bokeh is a hoot but may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Here's a sample handheld SOOC. No PP applied except small levels adj.

D800E with 500mm f:8 Reflex

Distance = Approx. 80ft.

Lens bought 1969.
