I'm going on vacation with my wife and my toddler. I usually bring a tripod but I find it cumbersome at times when I have to also carry my toddler's stuff and push the stroller. Would you trust a GorillaPod GP3 with a max load of 6lbs to hold a D800 with either a Sigma 35 or 85?

Not really, no. I think the pod would collapse

I wouldn't risk it -- get a cheap tripod that will collapse into your bag, but hold the weight.

Probably, given the right circumstances. I have a few that I use to stick speedlights in small spaces, but I've stuck my D800 on one a few times. I wouldn't trust it on the edge of a cliff, but with the legs spread out it's only a few inches off the ground, so there's not a lot of risk. It's not very sturdy though, so it won't help for critical work. I just use mine occasionally to snap a family pic or two when carrying a tripod is impractical.

Every tool has its uses. Don't ask it to do anything it's not built to do and you should be fine. If you're looking to do long exposures or critical macro work or something like that, I'd pass. Otherwise, they can come in handy.

What is it you would want to shoot where you had the camera on the Gorillapod? Are you shooting landscape photos?

I would also be careful of any lightweight tripod, not in the sense that that it might tip over with the D800, but if there is one thing we have found with the D800 is that it's ultra sensitive to any, and I mean any vibration or movement. Those 36 mp's are not very forgiving. So with a light tripod, even the mirror slap will cause the camera to move slightly, giving you a great potential for soft photos.

Giottos makes a small tripod that you can fit just about anywhere that would be perfect for travel. Look into that before using a gorilla pod.

Gorillapods are springy, no matter the load -- they're most useful as a lightweight remote flash clamp. I'd much prefer a pocketable table tripod. Leica and Kirk make really nice ones, and Manfrotto has a very inexpensive version that is fine.

Too much of a risk... invest in a travel tripod.

Really Right Stuff has a nice little $98 pocket pod, or a somewhat larger TP-243 tripod for "only" $375...

I bought a Joby (the biggest most expensive one) and promptly sent it back. Way too flimsy with my D700 and 24-85VR mounted. I didn't even try the 80-200

This is what I have been using as a small tripod. Folds to 17" with the ball head attached. Fits in most luggage.

I just upgraded to a carbon fiber small tripod (got a deal I couldn't pass up) so the Benro will be for sale. PM me if interested.

AA small travel tripod would do far better than the gorillapod. My gorillapod won't hold the D800 without collapsing.

I posted some images a few years ago of my gorrillapod focus supporting my d3x and 300f2.8 lens. I have used it often and it works well if you don't have space for a tripod. The focus can support upto 11Ibs.
