Hi all,

A few years ago I got a Manfrotto 494 ballhead to use with my NEX-7. With a ~1 lb lens, the view will sag a little when I tighten the ballhead and release the camera.

I had always thought it was because I got too light a ballhead -- but now I realize the camera itself is sagging.

For example, if instead of holding the camera to point the view, if I instead hold the plate beneath the camera, the sag is totally eliminated. But it's awkward to point the camera holding just the plate beneath it.

And this leads me to consider getting something like this:

A clamp with a built in handle -- so I can use the handle to point the camera, and get no sag.

Is there some disadvantage to this solution? Is there some other easy/cheap way to add a handle?

Thanks for any thoughts! -Scott

This is because the NEX-7 does not have a large enough contact surface for a robust mounting of the plate, especially the somewhat chintzy Manfrotto plates. This was a constant annoyance for me when shooting with the NEX-7 and a major reason why I sold mine

The real solution is this:

That's best combined with an Arca-Swiss head, but can also mount a Manfrotto plate with a much more robust attachement. Downside is that it's currently out of production, but you may be able to find one used, or contact Jim and find out when he's putting it back into production.

I suppose another approach is to switch to Novoflex adapter with one of these:

But that leaves more bulk on the camera, and only works with M lenses.
