One of my friends from med school. She was quite self conscious initially but later on let loose. A pleasure to talk to.

If you would like to read about her feel free to visit my blog - http://anuragkatyal.blogspot.com/2014/02/never-trust-fart.html

Suggestions for improvement are more than welcome.

Heh thanks Herb. It wasn't done for money or a portfolio. Just a bit of fun really. I want to get better at portraits and she wanted to get over her fear of being photographed. Both of us are in med school so paying a professional is a ways out of our budgets. But thank you for the kind remarks.

Sorry to say it, but she still appears uncomfortable. Sometimes with a person like this I will have a them interact with one of their friends/family while I capture their expressions. FWIW

Thanks for the idea, Bryan. I shall try that next time, if possible. Given our schedules, the only time we ever really have is lunch at noon on some days of the month when the light is as harsh as can be.

be sure to number your pics to make it easier for us to comment on individual pics. I think 2 and 5 are keepers. She definitely looks like she was relaxed for No. 5, totally having fun there. Great job!

Thank you. Those were both right at the end. Chronologically, it went 1, 4, 3, 2, 5.

A couple more from towards the end to chew on. Perhaps a more relaxed Liv.

Thoughts are welcome.

Finally a portrait without much make-up or Photoshop. I love this minimal make-up look. She's beautiful ... a real woman. I wish my "clients" would be ok with how they look without having me do all the skin softening and blemish-removal.

Thanks saaketham. I was watching tutorials on how to edit portraits in Lightroom but gave up halfway through because the image didn't look anything like the person anymore. I'm sure it is probably in poor form but I dislike editing portraits too much.

I'm with you all the way on over-editing, and not just portraits! Just because we ~can~ does not mean we ~should~. :-) I like #1 and #5 in the first set, and #3 and #4 in the second. She has a great smile!

I don't think she looks all that uncomfortable, and she is beautiful. I love her freckles. As far as the makeup goes - I'm not a fan of the overly made-up look and this girl doesn't need much. Her skin is nice and there's no need to mess with that. But her eyeliner is uneven - it sits above her lash line instead of flush with it. It's dry and flaky and it IS distracting. It's one of the first things I noticed, honestly. I know neither of you have the budget for a pro makeup artist but learning proper application of what makeup she does want to wear would be useful. Better eyeliner technique and an eyelash curler would have done wonders.

I shall pass on the suggestion Icl0706 and thank you for it. I shall leave it to her to figure out proper technique as I know as much about applying make up as a head of cabbage does, although I probably need it more than the cabbage

We have hell week coming up - 9 exams in the next few days but she promised me another try after the tests are done. I did purchase some inexpensive reflectors from Amazon so will be fun to play around with them since afternoon light is so harsh with shadows (only time we really have unfortunately), I figured the reflectors were the cheapest investment that could help with the nasty light.

Overall I like the series that gives a good representation of the lady. I happen to subscribe to the school of shooting that says you cannot represent a person with only one shot. To tell a story about a person, you need at least a few shots that reflects a breadth of the personality. With this as my benchmark, the series is quite good .... however I think there could be more emotional content than "the happy girl".
