Look great to me. Details in the ice and faces. You can't ask for much better. Good action and no backs skating away from the viewer. Nice work!

Fun shots. If you shot in raw, why not darken it slightly or try for just a little more detail in the ice and see how it looks to you.

I actually think they look a tad underexposed. In shots 1and 4 I see zero detail in the blacks.

Here is one I took at a game Friday. Granted, I was bouncing to strobes off of the ceiling, but if I had the blacks in my images that you have in 1-4 you would never be able to see where one uniform ended and the next started.

Yes, I know the strobes kind of change the game a bit, but still, while you are exposing for faces (which seem a bit underexposed in all the photos to me), you will bring back some of the shadow detail. Do not be afraid of blowing some of the ice out. As long as you can see the lines, and some of the imperfections from skating on it, it is fine if it is blown out some.

I really like the last image..I just wish it was sticks or stacks of pucks instead of row of water bottles.

I think you got it!
Seems to me your often deciding between white OR black... for detail.
And depending, with light changes on ice surface I think you can often have both withing a series.
As long as face is right.. audience should be happy.

On my crappy work monitor (that I did calibrate this week), the shots actually look more under exposed than over exposed. The whites in the uniforms have a gray tone to them and all the detail in the ice is readily apparent. If it were me, I would bump up the exposure a bit more. I think you have the room to work with and I think the faces could be lightened up along with it without any issues.

Why do you think they are too light? They look spot on to me.

Reuben, I think you have captured some good action for your first hockey experience. From what you are posting here I would say your real close on exposure. It really is a matter of taste and final media. For parent print sales I would consider pushing a little more to bring out faces/details in the blacks. For digital display/web site, I think you are right on. I tend to blow out the ice in mine a little while pushing for exposed faces since my main market is parent sales for print. Good job, keep shooting.

Tim
